英ジャズ・ロック界の旗頭ジョン・ハイズマンがゲイリー・ムーアやドン・エイリーらと共に結成したコラシアムIIの1作目と2作目(どちらも77年録音)。技術至上主義的なインプロヴィゼイションやインタープレイは70年代の前衛的ムードを思い出させるが、職人気質のメンバーが多いせいか、気取ったところはない。とにかく真面目に追求しています、という態度は学究肌というべきかも。

かつて「コラシウム」としてアラン・ホールズワースやオリー・ハルソールという逸材を世の中に送り出したジョン・ハインズマンが「コラシウム2」として再スタートを切った第2弾。ブロンズレーベルからMCAへと移籍後の1977年に発表されました。メンバーは元スキッド・ロウのブルース・オリエンテッドギタリスト、ゲイリー・ムーア、ドン・エイリー（キーボード）、ジョン・モール（ベース）という4人編成。

アラン・ホールズワースが在籍した初期「コラシウム」がブリティッシュ・ハードロック路線の王道を突き進んだ作風だったのに対して、この作品で聴かれるサウンドは明らかにジャズロックのテイストが濃厚で、ハインズマンがもつジャズ的要素が色濃く表れた作品になっています。また、初期「コラシウム」がもっていた陰鬱な陰はほとんどなりを潜め、ドライでスピード感重視の疾走感あふれる痛快な作品へと変貌しています。特筆すべきは、ブルースを基調にしたプレイが特徴だった若きゲイリー・ムーアがジャズロックに転換した結果、これまでにない新しい面を見せています。いま改めて聴き直すと、さすがに時代を感じさせますが、当時のジャズロックを語るうえで欠かせない重要作品です。

ハイズマンが求めていた完成型がコロシアム2なんだと思う。
元々ジャズロックバンドという位置付けで始まったコロシアムだけど、ゲイリームーアが加わってブルースにハードロックもミクスチャーされ独特のジャズロックを展開している。
スピード感のあるカチッとした音が何ともかっこいい。ゲイリームーアの新たな一面が見れる大傑作です!
