   89年に録音したパット・メセニーのゲフィンでの第3作。オーネット・コールマンやチャーリー・ヘイデンとのスペシャル・プロジェクト、あるいはギター・トリオなど、さまざまなフォーマットで幅広く活動するパットだけど、基本となるのはやはり盟友ライル・メイズと組んだレギュラー・グループ。80年代後半から90年代にかけてのパットのレギュラー・グループは、なんといってもブラジル色豊かなポップ・サウンドに特徴があった。これはまさにその時代を象徴するアルバムだ。路線的には87年録音の前作『スティル・ライフ』に近く、少年のような声を持ったマルチ・タレント、ペドロ・アズナールの存在感も強烈である。パット特有のメロディックなナンバーはどれも美しく、メロディ・メイカーとしてのパットにも魅了される。<1>などは7拍子と4拍子が入り組んだ複雑な曲だけど、難解な感じはまったくなく、すんなりと心に入ってくる。曲はライル・メイズ＆ペドロ・アズナールが各1曲、それ以外はすべてパットのオリジナル。（市川正二）

約2年ぶりの新作。ブラジル音楽のエッセンスを吸収して,より優しく逞しく成熟しつつある,というところか。フュージョンというよりも,むしろニュー・エイジ・ミュージック的なスピリットを感じさせるナチュラルなメセニー・タッチを静かに楽しみたい。

パットメセニーといえば個人的には「想い出のサンロレンツォ」が最高傑作（特にタイトル曲）だと思いますが、このアルバムも素晴らしいです。パットメセニーのアルバムにしては珍しくボーカルがフューチャーされているものもあり、しかもそれが演奏に完全に溶け込んでいてかなり美しいものとなっています。どの曲も心地よく聞けるものではありますが、特に私が感動したのは８曲目の「ドリームオブザリターン」です。ホント美しいの一言です。私が今まで聞いてきたあらゆる曲の中で間違いなくベスト３に入る名曲です。

音楽を聴くという行為は何のためにあるのか。僕はPat Methenyの音楽を聴くたびにそのことを考える。
Patの音楽を聴くときは、他の音楽とは違うサムシング・エルスを感じる。Ｊ−ＰＯＰを聴いて、歌詞やちょっとしたコード展開に心動かされることもたまにはあるけれど、それとは全く違う体験なのだ（Ｊ−ＰＯＰを否定しているわけではないけど）。
この作品では、その感覚が特に強い。ＣＤをスタートさせてから終わるまで、ずっと異世界に連れて行かれているようだ。音楽とは、そもそもこういうものだったのではないのか。音楽を聴くというのは、こういう体験をすることだったのではないのか。
巷に溢れる音楽を消費しながらも、心の真ん中では彼と同時代に生きていることができた、そのことにとにかく感謝している。
全ての音楽ファンに聴いてもらいたい。

お気に入りの中でも１番好きなアルバムがこのLETTER FROM HOMEです。
アルバムの構成から何からもう文句なく最高傑作です。
朝のコーヒー・タイム、一日が終わってほっと一息した時、いつも聞いてついご機嫌になってしまう大好きなアルバムです。
メセニーにしては珍しく、歌詞付の曲があるので貴重！！
私が特に好きなのは11曲目の『SLIP AWAY』で、PEDRO AZNAR のVoiceが何とも言えずに大好きで何回聞いても痺れます。
とにかく最高傑作と言っていいほどに宝物的なアルバムの一つです。
