会話。会話。会話。勝負は会話のみ。このエッセンスだけで面白くすることは本当に難しい。斬新な脚本はもちろん大切だけど、役者の演技と演出が本当にミックスして上手く膨らんでゆかないと絶対成立しない。だけど、この映画は大成功。純粋に『会話』が楽しい。ユニークな人物像。テンポとリズムが上手く噛み合って、空回りゼロ。すごく完成度が高い。そして、すべての登場人物がとても愛らしい。どこにでも『居そう』な人物と日常のリアリティを、卓越した面白さに仕上げたジム･ジャームッシュに賞賛。そしてすべての役者さん達に拍手。

ああ、こうして一人で夜を過ごしている間にも、
世界には色々な人が何かをこなそうと、自分の利益を探して、
期待もしていない人に偶然めぐり合って、他愛もない会話を交わして、
地球は回っているのだなあ、と感じる変な充足感のある映画です。
人の不幸も可能性も期待も絶望も、ひっくるめて地球の小さな粒子のように、平等に時間が過ぎる、そんな気分でゆっくり寝られると思います。

誰だったか、コメディの定義は過程によるのではなく、ラストで主人公が「生きる」ことだ、と言っていたのを思い出す。タクシーの中を一つの舞台と捉えて二人芝居（四人であったり、一人が死人であったりするが）を演じさせたといった趣。技術云々だけではなく、本当にセンスの良い監督と、隙のない演技ができる役者が集まらなくてはこんな作品は不可能だっただろう。トム・ウェイツの音楽も涙腺を刺激する。
