ロス市警のＳＷＡＴ隊員、ジャックは、高層ビル内のエレベーターに仕掛けられた爆弾の爆発で閉じ込められた人質を救出した。犯人は、爆弾処理班に所属していた元警官のハワード。要求した金さえ得られずに業を煮やしたハワードは、市バスのの床下に、時速50マイルに達したら起爆スイッチが入り、その後に時速５０マイル以下に落とすと爆発する特殊な仕掛けの爆弾をとりつけた。ハワードはジャックに仕掛けを教え、乗客を１人でも降ろしたらリモコンでバスを爆破すると脅迫する。ジャックはバスをを追うが、バスはすでに高速道路を時速50マイル以上の速度で走行しており、爆弾の起爆スイッチは既に起動していた。・・・

キアヌ・リーブスは精悍なSWAT隊員という役柄が非常に合っています！この作品が一番カメラワークがいい！てきぱきと乗客に指示を出し、何としてでも乗客全員を無事に降ろしたい、という正義感の強いジャックが本当に素敵です。特に犯人の思惑通りになりそうな場面で、口惜しそうにキュッと唇を噛み締めるところなんて、もうサイコー！
