この映画が、映画デビュー作だというアート・カーニーの演じる老人は、凛として、常に流されることなく、信じる道を歩いていきます。アートの淡々としてそれでいて品のよい老人は、アカデミー主演男優賞にまさにふさわしい演技です。アメリカの膿んだ部分（いまも変わらない）をとりあげながら、その澱みに染まることなく、生きていく老人の姿は、ああいう老後を送りたいと思わせます。相棒のトント（猫）の演技も素晴らしいです。猫好きはそれだけでもたまらないでしょう。あの余韻の残るラストシーンの光景を思い出すと、胸がせつなさできゅんとします。どの年代のひとが見ても楽しめる、考えさせられる名作です。
