私がこの「北国の帝王」を昔見たときは、「列車のタダ乗りに命を賭ける」という設定のとんでもなさに、ホンマかいな・・・と思いながら、あまりのカッコいいストーリ、男らしさにシビれて夢中で観てしまいました。
列車にタダ乗りしながら、アメリカ中をのんびり旅して回る人々がいるなんて、設定としてはとんでもない・・・ほんとの話なの？と思っていたのですが、実はこれは本当の話（この素晴らしいストーリーは創作ですが・・・）｡

1930年代のアメリカ大恐慌時代、職を求めてアメリカ中を移動していた失業者たちに交通費などあるわけも無く、実際に列車のただ乗りは行われていたのです｡
彼らは「ホーボー」といわれ、当時は必要に迫られていたので必死でした｡

ちなみに、ホーボーは、現在でもたくさんいます｡
現在のホーボーは、都会のせせこましい暮らしがいやで、自ら進んで自由に生きようとする人々がやっており、仲間内でも独自のネットワーク、文化、社会を形成しています。
（なお「ヒッピー」とはまったく違う人たちです）
彼らの中にはこの映画の「エースナンバーワン」のような有名人もいますし、彼らは年に数回の年次集会までアメリカ中で行っており、知られざるのんびりしたコミュニティなのです｡
日本と違って、アメリカの貨物列車は全長2Kmにも及ぶ長大なものが少なくなく、だからこそこのような文化も生まれたのでしょう｡
もちろん「ホ-ボー」のやっている「列車のただ乗り」はアメリカでも法律違反ですし、危険ですから絶対真似してはいけませんけど・・・

まだ小学生の時に見たアーネスト・ボーグナインの顔が印象的、というより、恐ろしかったことを今でも憶えている。無賃の帝王であるリー・マービン演じるエースナンバーワンは、車掌との戦いの中、若者に自分の技を開陳してゆく、そして・・・。アクションに仮装しているが、洗練されたストーリーと共に、哀愁漂うその映像には、古き良きアメリカをやさしい眼差しで見守るアルドリッチ監督の姿がそこにはある。今のハリウッド映画にありがちな商業主義的使命感はカケラも無く、かと云って教条主義的説教も無い。江戸っ子口調で「お前は気にいらネー、べらんぼうめ。」だから終りにしてやる的な、観終わった時の爽快感がたまらない。違った意味でハートフルな映画だ。「カリンコロン、キンカラン、キンキンキン。フォ、フォ、フォ。」って、車掌！そこまでスルカ普通！。

エースナンバーワンが粗大ごみ捨て場で一服している情景や、列車を止めるために線路に油を塗りたくる場面では、昔日の空き地での子供達の振る舞いや、泥遊びをする子供達のような、無邪気ささえ連想させる。アルドリッチの映画が、倫理にすりよらず、かといって反倫理を標榜するわけでなく、それらに覚醒する以前の原初的な運動欲求の野に留まり続けるとき、あまりに原理的なその意志に感動せずにはいられない。
