リー・ヘイゼルウッドのプロデュースによるナンシー・シナトラの香りあり。弦楽器とピアノが悲しげにからみあう。果てしない感情をほのかに描出する。しかしその手法は曖昧ではない。一曲一曲に音楽に対する美しい希望がある。音楽は空気の臭気や光の粒までも伝えることができるはずである、という信念である。それを内に秘めつつ儚さ、不安定な感情、かすかな恋慕などを織りまぜつつ、涼やかな中に痛みを隠すことを忘れない。頼りなげな風情は曲の性質によるものであり、大仰なそぶりを嫌うストイシズムゆえだろう。頼りにならないことを見透かされることを恐れて強がったり狂ったふうを装ったりいい子ぶったり色男を気取るような輩に奥ゆかしさで勝つ。そよそよせず考え過ぎずそれでいて構築美に酔わない厳しさもある。青さを武器にせず、淡々と静物画を描き続ける画学生のような冷やかな炎を見出すこともできるポップ。壁の染みへの愛が感じられる。 (湯浅学) --- 2000年06月号

ベル・アンド・セバスチャンの４枚目のアルバム。このグループを初めて知る人は、アコースティックの楽曲にお兄ちゃん風の優しい声、ときどき優しい声のお姉ちゃんも歌う音楽と考えてください。これ以前に出された３枚のアルバムのいずれかを持っている人は、とりあえず同じような音楽を期待できます。ただし、２枚目「天使のため息」３枚目「ボーイ・ウィズ・アラブ・ストラップ」に見られるようなアルバムとしてのまとまりという点では、今作はやや劣ります。つまり聴く曲と聴かない曲の差が大きい。また、過去の作品より全体的に暗い印象があります。一曲入魂で曲をかける方は裏切られない曲はいくつか入っています。アルバム全体をかけっぱなしにするという人は、少し違和感のある曲もあるでしょう。全１１曲、４０分５１秒です。

１~２へかけての流れが最高だと思います。
緑色のジャケットのアルバムも色んなタイプの楽曲が収録されていましたが、このアルバムでは全体的に完成度が高くなっているように感じました。特に２曲目は個人的にいって、人生のなかで一番の楽曲です。おすすめ！

素晴らしい輝きを放つ楽曲の数々。
中でも２曲目の“The Model”！
一日の始まりに聞くと清々しい生気がわいてくる様な
きらびやかな曲です。皆さんが仰っているように
他のアルバムに比べると若干統一感に欠ける印象を受けますが、
それを感じさせないほどの美しい名曲が詰まっています。
