兼ねてからソロ作ではカヴァーを得意としてきたフェリー,なんと30年代スタンダードに挑戦。まるで昔のビリー・ホリデイの歌ものみたいなこだわりのサウンドで,曲によってはモノラル。そこに例の縮緬ヴォーカルがなんともはかなげに被さる。似合ってます。

ブライアン・フェリー久々の新作は全曲スタンダードのアルバム化となるものだ。楽曲選びの特徴は1920年代から30年代にかけての、すこぶる美味な名曲ばかり。それをフェリーはビッグバンドで華やかにというのではなく、きわめてエレガントなフェリー流の聴かせ方に徹し、ダンディなソムリエよろしくの熟成表現で酔わせるといった魅力のものでもあるわけだ。コットン・クラブの時代やミュージカルの古典への精通度というよりは、フェリーだと、モンドでラウンジな要素もリッチで超一流だということ。映画『カサブランカ』からの表題曲(1)とクルト・ワイルの有名曲(15)をブックエンドのようにも配置するなか、センス際立つアレンジの下でスウィングし、センチメンタルにも泣くフェリーの色香の抗し難い魅力。その前にあっては、ロバート・パーマーの『ライディン・ハイ』やシニード・オコナーの『永遠の詩集』を無理に引き合いに出す必要もないだろう。 (会田裕之) --- 1999年11月号

30年代のスタンダード・ナンバーを集めたカヴァー・アルバム。
古き佳き時代を懐かしむように、フェリーが粋な歌を聴かせてくれる。
繊細で過不足ないアレンジで小粋にスイングする演奏もすばらしい。
そして、良い意味でレトロな音質にこだわった音作りもなかなかだ。
ちなみに、あれもこれもどれもこれも熱烈なラヴソングである。

01. のタイトル曲はご存じ「カサブランカ」の挿入歌だが、
私的な好みで言えば、他の誰のヴァージョンよりも
メロメロな（？）感じがすばらしい！
他には、アップテンポにアレンジされ、新鮮味を感じる10.,
希代の色男が歌うことで曲の魅力が増したようなバラッド・11.
などが好み。

音楽を生業にする者として、70年も昔に創られた歌が世紀を超えて
心に響く意味をしみじみと考えてしまう。

物思う秋の夜長に・・・いや秋に限らず、恋するお二人におすすめ。

ロキシーあるいはブライアンのソロをずっと聞いてきた自分が初めて発売当時買わなかったのがこのCD。今更なんでこんな古いスタンダードナンバー集なの？でも今とても後悔しています。最高に良いです！ブライアン・フェリーてボーカリストとしても本当に凄いことを証明してみせた1枚だと思います。特にお気に入りはWhere Or When。思わず涙がこぼれるぐらい感動しました。

このアルバムの"As Time Goes By"は一時期コマーシャルでも流されていました。
私自信、昔は結構古い映画を良く見ていたこともあり、こういうレトロな感覚は結構好きなのでかなりのお気に入りです。
オリジナルを知らない曲も多数でなんとも言えませんが、彼の場合はアップテンポにアレンジしたりすることが多いので
それが聞きやすくなっている要因かもしれません。
彼の、「流行を追うのではなく、自分のやりたい事をやる。」という姿勢がはっきりと出ている作品です。
大人になったFerryがちょっとしゃがれた声で感情を込めてしみじみと歌っているのがピッタリはまっています。
思わずグラスを傾けながら聴きたくなる・・・
Ferryファンのみならず、レトロな音楽好きな方々にも聴いてもらいたい一枚です。
しかし、この後に出たアルバム"Frantic"では一変してロックンロールしているのがまた面白いですね。
