　本業はプロデューサーであるマイケル・クレトゥのプロジェクト：エニグマ。1996年発表の3rd.アルバム。副題は『王は死んだ、新王国万歳！』という意味のフランス語である。

　1st.アルバムではダンス・ビートとグレゴリオ聖歌をミックスした異様なサウンドで衝撃を巻き起こし。2nd.では民族音楽を思わせるスキャットをフィーチャー、曲によってはハードロックの要素さえあり。そしてこの3rd.アルバムでは冥界へと誘うようなグランド・ビートが支配する。本作では殆どの曲をクレトゥ自身が歌っているが、これがとてつもなく上手い。張りのある素晴らしい高音で、男性でこの高さはまず出せない。

　1st.シングルになった「Beyond The Invisible」は特に印象的。最大のヒット曲「Return To Innocence」に劣らぬ完成度だ。ニュース・グループで「この曲で人生観が変わった」と投稿している人がいて、その文章があまりに鬼気迫っていたので、普及し始めたばかりだった「インターネット」という奴を使って、公式サイトに聴きに行った覚えがある。結果は、「同感！」だった。悲痛な旋律ゆえ、音楽を聴いて「ハッピーになりたい」人には勧めないが、冥界へ誘うようなこの旋律は、ちょっと他では味わえない。
　2nd.シングル「T.N.T. For The Brain」も同路線。脳内に仕掛けた爆薬、という意味で、心に直接響いてくる催眠のようなリフレインが秀逸。

　3rd.シングルとして「The Roundabout」が予定されていたが、前2作のアルバムと比べると売れなかったため、発売中止になってしまった。ENIGMAの場合、単品独立で聴けるのはシングルだけなので、ちょっと残念であった。ちなみに歌詞は無く、♪アイェ！アイェ！アーイアイヤ！という意味を持たない声が、やたら印象的なフレーズを歌う、危ない曲である。この曲に限らず、本作は「心の内面に潜む狂気」が感じられる。前2作のアルバムに比して商業的に売れなかったのはそのせいだろう。しかし、良い曲が多いという意味では前2作を遙かに凌ぐ完成度。「人生観が変わった」という前述氏の言葉は決して誇張ではない。

　尚、黄緑の半透明プラスチックに印刷されたインナーは豪華で、非常にお金がかかっている。セロリの香りまで付いている。日本盤は歌詞・対訳・解説付き。100点満点の採点でも97点ぐらいは付く、凄まじい作品！

作品を作りながら聴くのにいい曲で、創作意欲が湧きインスピレーションがひらめいてきます。神経を集中したいときに聴きたい曲のひとつです。

１・２作目は好きなのだけど、これは雰囲気が違う。
やたらと出番の多い男性ボーカルの歌い回しがロックっぽいというか、頑張りすぎというか...うるさいです。
そのせいで何度も現実に引き戻されてしまって音に入り込めないです。
好みの問題だとは思いますが...。
