~キースのドラッグ裁判、創作面での停滞、パンク世代からの突き上げなど、ストーンズの最大の危機だった７０年代後半。しかしこのアルバムでそのすべてをはねのけ、８０年代初頭までのストーンズは再び無敵の王道を突き進むことになる。

全１０曲４０分、どの曲も潔いほどに絞り込まれており、無駄がいっさいない。キースとロンのギターの掛け合いはタイトかつワイルドで、どちらもリズムであり、どちらもリードであり、それをあうんの呼吸で交換していく現在にまで続くストーンズのサウンドはこのアルバムで最初に完成されたのであった。ワッツのドラムスも、これでもかとばかりの手数を発揮し~~、ミックも遠慮なく爆発している。

１位になったミス・ユー、カーティス・メイフィールドを思い!起こさせるビースト・オブ・バーデン、今の東京にも通じるシャタード（東京がＮＹに追いついたのかもしれない）などのヒット曲もよいが、パンクなどくそ食らえとばかりにワイルド＆ハイテンポのストーンズ節の秘技を炸裂させるWhen the Whip Comes~~ DownやRespctableなども痛快そのもの。

そしてキースが自らの人生を重ねるBefore they make me runは、キースだけではなくすべての傷つき、苦しんだ男や女にとって最高の癒しと励ましを未だに与えてくれる名作中の名作だと思う。これぞストーンズ、これがストーンズの凄さなのだと言いたくなるアルバムだ。~

ロンウッドの加入によるメリットを本格的にしゃぶり尽くした作品だ。飛び出す絵本もどきの意表を突いたジャケット、久しぶりに極上のブルースハープを主声に迎えた必殺のダンスチューンを巻頭に据えるあたり相変わらずストーンズらしい。全体的にはフェイセスのDNAが完全に取り込まれ左右にねじれ絡み合う二重螺旋のようなギターがテイラー時代とは異なる新たな躍動感を生み出している。こうした特徴は渋いソウルカバー3にさえもバリバリに出ている。自分達を｢肥えた豚｣と嘲笑したパンクスに対して開き直って威張っている風が痛快な7や10、同様に彼等に触発されたロックンロール25は既出"It’s Only Rock’n Roll"よりその言葉が相応しいほどの力が迸っている。

60年代を偲ばせる女性蔑視の4、これの対極にある和みのカントリー6、"Happy"に比肩する洒落にならない心の叫びのキース節が光る8、"Miss You"と近い歌世界ながらより南部ブルース的な9と一つも捨て曲のない傑作。数多く録音した中からライブ向きの曲を厳選した結果が納得できる内容で、OutTakeにも優れた作品が多いセッションだったことでも有名。
