   ベン・ハーパーのサウンドは理論上はすばらしいものだ。カリフォルニア育ちの24歳のハーパーは、昔ながらのアコースティック・ギター、オリジナルの政治的な歌、それにデヴィッド・リンドレーやトレーシー・チャップマンやタジ・マハールにインスパイアされたミシシッピデルタ・ブルースとカリプソという異色の組み合わせのサウンドにその身を捧げている。だが不運にも、その独自のコンセプトによるパフォーマンスは、本デビュー作ではまぎれもなく残念な結果に終わっている。最大の問題は、ハーパーのボーカルだ。ぼそぼそとつぶやくボーカルは不明瞭で、その音域の狭さは、彼に比べればボブ・ディランの方がよっぽどアル・グリーンに近く聞こえるほどだ。その上、パフォーマンスは全体的に活力にとぼしく、のんびりとしたカウボーイ・ジャンキーズの方がよっぽどセックス・ピストルズに近く聞こえるほどだ。ソングライティングとギターの指さばきは控え目ながら才能をうかがわせるが、眠気を誘うボーカルを帳消しにするほど並外れたものではとうていない。ロドニー・キングの不器用なカヴァー曲、マヤ・アンジェロウの詩を用いた曲、失意のラブソングは、どちらかと言えば、トレーシー・チャップマンの爽快なデビュー作ではなく、期待外れだった2作目の方を思い起こさせる。（Geoffrey Himes, Amazon.com）

　私の勝手な解釈ですが、このアルバムは、数カ月かけて色々なアイデアや楽器、演奏方法やエフェクト等試みて一度完成した物を、時間を空けてから、今度はよけいな物を削ぎ落としていくというような作業を経て出来上がった物ではないかと思います。とても完成度の高いものだと感じられます。また全体の雰囲気の中に、Benが自分自信にすごく向き合っている部分が感じられます。ギターに関してもサンハウスや、ブラインドウィリーの音が随所に感じられ、自分的には鳥肌モノです！言い過ぎかもしれませんが、聴いていて色んな風景がその人それぞれに見えてくる。私にとっては９０年代最高のアルバムのです。Ben Harper最高！

最高です。ライブでもハイライトで演奏される曲も多いし。
にもかかわらずアマゾンのレヴュー。ずいぶんスノビッシュな表現で
この盤を叩いてくれてますが全く参考になりません。
こんなに素晴らしい作品をそんな評価してちゃまずいですよ。

アルバム全体に漂う独特の雰囲気が最高です。彼は、か細い声だから魅力的なんです。これが、だみ声や張り上げる声だったら好きじゃないですね。
スキップ・ジェイムス＋ボブ・マーリーっていう印象を受けました。
