ピーター・ガブリエル在籍時のジェネシスの完成を見たアルバム。ジャケットのへたうまさのイメージも相まって『サパース・レディ』を聴かずに死ぬロック・ファンは可愛そうと思われる名盤。延々と繰り広げられるイマジネーションいっぱいの世界は25年たった今聴いても感動が薄れることがありません。ただし聴くのにエネルギーがいるかも。

72年に発売されたジェネシス４枚目のアルバムでピーターガブリエル在籍時のアルバムとしては最高傑作に上げる人も多いアルバムです。

ＰＯＰ化するまでのジェネシスのサウンドは、純プログレとしてドラマチックなサウンドでありながら、どこか叙情性を感じさせる所が特徴ではないでしょうか。また、このアルバムの特徴は、20分を超える大作「サパースレディ」が収録されていることです。組曲形式で構成されており、様々な展開を見せながら、この１曲で１つのドラマを形成している名曲です。

ピーガブのボーカルにはややクセがあるかもわかりませんが、サウンドは純プログレで非常に聴き応えのあるものであり、多くのプログレファンにお奨めしたいアルバムです。

プログレ的ジェネシス3作目。「ウォッチャー・オブ・ザ・スカイズ」はメロトロンの音から静かに始まるが、切り裂くようなリズムがフェードインし、激しい曲が展開される。その興奮を鎮めるように「タイム・テーブル」では、バラードを歌うピーターの声が心地よい。

このアルバムの圧巻は、生ギターの静かなソロ曲「ホライズン」の後に始まる、20分近い一大組曲「サパーズ・レディー」。幻想的な生ギターのアルペジオをバックにピーターが静かに歌う曲から始まり、その後、激しくなったり、沈静化したりと抑揚を繰り返し、曲は一気にクライマックスへ。曲目リストにある「ウィローズ・ファーム」の次の曲「アポカリプス・イン・9/8」では、フィル・コリンズが常人ではまねできない変拍子を刻む。
まさにジェネシスの最高傑作。
ただし、ポップ化後のジェネシスのファンの方には理解できない世界なので、お薦めできません。
