このサントラを聴くと思わず涙が出てくる時があります。特に冒頭の教授の３曲を聴くと、皇帝溥儀のそれまでの中国の王朝の歴史が終わる、絶望感だったり、目の前まで来ている崩壊に対する、ある種の現実逃避だったり、それがとにかく残酷な迄に美しくて、泣けてしまいます。個人的にはこんなに美しい映画音楽にはいままでふれたことがありませんでした。飯野賢治みたいに授業中にイヤホンで聴いてみたいな。そんな年齢じゃないか。

言わずと知れたベルナルド・ベルトリッチ監督の映画「ラストエンペラー」のオリジナル・サウンドトラック。
ロック界の大物デヴィッド・バーン、中国人作曲家スー・ソン、そしてあの坂本龍一の３氏による作品群。
アカデミー音楽賞受賞に相応しく、その完成度の高さは、数多（あまた）のサントラとは一線を画す出来映えである。

三者三様の個性的な楽曲が堪能できるが、特筆すべきはやはり坂本龍一の作品であろう。
あのエンドタイトルテーマがあったからこそ、この映画が感動的な大団円を迎えることができたと言っても過言ではない。
歴史の波に弄ばれる廃帝の波乱に富んだ生涯を描くこの映画は、これらの楽曲によって強固に支えられていることを改めて知らしめた１枚である。

5.0 out of 5 stars ベルナルド・ベルトルッチ＋坂本龍一の最高傑作, 2007/2/12
坂本龍一はこのアルバムに対するベルトルッチの注文は厳しく、
何度も書き直しさせられたということを当時ラジオで話していた。
ベルトルッチ監督は、もう一人の音楽担当であるスー・ソンを
撮影中に作曲した曲を演奏させたというエピソードもある。
その影響もあってか、坂本龍一がベルトルッチと組んだ３作品はどれも素晴らしい。
映画監督と音楽がどれほど関連が深いかということが良く分かる。
中でもラスト・エンペラーは中国音楽と楽器の特徴を上手く取り入れており
テクノポップ全盛の中で、こういう音楽が出来上がるということが衝撃的でもあった。
