私は自他共に認める吉川晃司ファンですが、アルバムジャケットや選曲からしてあまり好きではありません。吉川さんはアルバムの中にこそ素晴らしい楽曲がわんさか有るので、是非次回ベストを出す機会があるのなら、ファン投票を実施して頂きたい。とは言ってもこのCDは東芝EMIでのシングル曲を網羅しており、これから吉川を聞くぞという方には非常にお勧めできる選曲となっています。せつなさを殺せない、KISSに撃たれて眠りたい、アクセル、BOY'S LIFE等、ライヴに欠かせない楽曲もしっかり押さえてあります。しかし、ジャケットはもっと何とかならんかったかなぁ・・・

敢えて分けるとすれば吉川晃司を自身二つの（三つの）時代があると考える。つまり、布袋との伝説的ユニットCOMPLEXを挟んで、それ以前の８０年代の吉川、そしてそれ以後の９０年代以降の吉川だ。吉川晃司の素晴らしい所は時代が２０年近く経ても人々を惹きつけるナンバーをリリースしている所だ。多くの歌手が時代を経る事にサウンドカラーやアーティストとしての方向性を変えるパターンが多い音楽界において。お気に入りのアーティストが居たとしても永年魅了する曲をリリースする歌手は私の中では、ほんの一握りだ。

確かに、吉川もその多くの例に漏れずその方向性は随分と変ったのかもしれない。端的に言うならば、上記で挙げた８０年代の吉川と９０年代の吉川だ。つまり８０年代はアイドル的なジャンルでリリースし、派手な化粧とタイトな衣装に身を包み、時にアグレッシブで妖艶なるダンスを見せ付けディスコナンバーと熱唱、かたや９０年代は所謂シンガーソングライターとしての能力を開花させ、新たにロックナンバーを多く取り入れるようになった。。というような自分の中での解釈がある。
しかし、ここで多くのアーティストと異なる所が、方向性が変っても魅了する楽曲をリリースし続けている普遍性にある。これは、ある意味私の中での決定的な長所でもある。ダンスナンバーでは、踊りたくなるようなハードナンバーをそして現在に至るロックナンバーでは、疾走感豊かなハードナンバーが満載なのである。

このCDは、特に後半の吉川のベスト的な要素が強い。この時期は流石にリアル世代だったので大半が既に聞き尽くしてきた曲なのだが、それでも尚改めて聴くとスピード感豊かなビートに圧倒的なまでに魅了されるのである。
総じて言える事は、やはりハードナンバーが多いという事だろうか。そういう曲が好きな人にはもってこいだろう。

そして、これらの曲を再度聴くことで、未知の８０年代吉川サウンドも浴びてみたい欲望が現れるのだ。
