メジャーデビュー初作品だが、インディーズ時代から既に確立されたスタイルを持っており、楽曲、演奏ともにとても聴きごたえのある作品になっている。ボーカルakiの声に違和感を感じない人なら、誰でも楽しめると思う。特にギターは絶品。メロディーにとても気持ち良く馴染んでいるのに、ある瞬間とても印象的に耳に残る。オススメの曲はヴィーナス。マスター、針の筵（むしろ）なども他のバンドでは聴けないスタイルの曲だ。気付けばこのCDをエンドレスにリピートしていることでしょう。

96年、メジャー第1作目のアルバム。Laputaを知るうえで重要な名曲たちがそろっている。鋭く硬質でハードだが繊細でメロディアスなサウンド、はかなく美しい歌メロ。akiさんのボーカルは独特の抑揚と高い表現力で、サビ以外の部分までサビであるかのような聞き応えを生む。詩世界も独特の暗さ・悲哀・狂気・病的さを持つ。
「trance」はインスト。「Four leaf clover」は透明感がありメロディアスだが、詩はどこか冷たく不気味なものを感じさせる。「MASTER」は激しく飛び込んでくるような勢いのある曲だが、歌声は切なさと透明感があり実に気持ちよく突き抜ける。人ならぬ存在への狂った、しかし、ひたむきな愛。「迷子の迷子」は陰鬱で悲しい詩が好き。「Instead of ache」はせっかく盛り上がってきたのにサビで速度が遅くなるのが気に入らず、最初は良いと思わなかった。でも聞いてる内に味が出て今では大好きな曲。とにかく歌・ギターともにメロディーが切なくて泣ける。ギターソロもラピュータらしくて良い。「止まない耳鳴り」はインディーズからメジャー初期にかけてのラピュータの典型って感じがする曲。神経症じみた病んだ世界。「かげろう」は美しいバラード。「硝子の肖像」は文句なしにカッコイイ！スピード感と切れ味のあるサウンド、流麗でありつつ胸に突き刺さってくる歌声。私にとって、Laputaの曲の中だけでなく、V系の曲全ての中でもかなり上位にくる名曲です。「Asleep & Awake不眠と催眠」はダークでハードだがサビは綺麗。次の曲へのつながり方がカッコイイ。「針の筵」は前奏の大空を駆け巡るようなギターが爽快！ヒステリックに訴えかけるような歌声が胸を揺さぶる。どん底の絶望へと落下していく。「Venus」は早口な歌が印象的。崩壊寸前の精神の中、あなただけが消えない。美に病的なまでに魅入られていく。

最近流行のデス、メタルコアバンドは置いといて(あの辺はサウンド的にはV系では無いので)、「ヴィジュアル系」ってどんな音楽？と聴かれた時に差し出したいアルバムの一つ。どこまでもダークでデカダンス、駆け抜ける疾走感と、Kouichiにしか出せないギターの音、クラシカルで妖艶なアルペジオ、Akiの狂気的なのに聴きやすい歌とメロディなど完璧なるダークV系の理想像の一つとして完成されたアルバムである。「硝子の肖像」「針の筵」「MASTER」などのシングルタイプの曲をはじめ、どの曲も隙が無くアルバムとしての統一感も凄まじい。ちなみに「硝子の肖像」はアルバムミックスでシングル版より若干ソフトなアレンジになっている。こういう独自かつ確固たる世界と音楽性を持ったバンドが台頭していたなら世間からのV系というジャンルに対する認識も変わっていたかもしれない。全く古さを感じさせず、今なお評価され支持され続ける名盤。必聴です。
