   浅川マキの初期から現在までの作品集『DARKNESS』は計3枚出ているが、その1作目となる本盤は、60~70年代の作品で構成されたディスク1、近藤等則、本多俊之、山下洋輔、ボビー・ワトソンらとの80年代のジャズ・セッションを収めたディスク2という濃密な2枚組。伝説的なデビュー作『浅川マキの世界』からは「夜が明けたら」ほか4曲収録されているが、オリジナル盤に入っていた寺山修司の手になる効果音がカットされている点に注目。「時には…」こそ聴けないものの、その独特のしゃがれ声と歌い方により表現される世界はブルースそのものであり、日本におけるオルタナティヴ・ミュージックの先駆けといえる個性を感じさせる。 （木村ユタカ）

　さびれた港町、凍てつく潮風、薄暗い路地裏…
そういった風景と人々の息づかい、匂いまでもが伝わってくる。
　都会で暮らす誰しもが、失ったはずの懐かしい故郷…
　二度と戻れはしない年月のなかで、憩っているふるさとの感触が、このアルバムには閉じ込められている。
　Makiの歌声は、人々に忘れ去られ、遺棄された情念のレクイエムである。

浅川マキの歌を聴く度、
僕はなぜあの時二十歳じゃなかったんだろうと、思うのだ。
あの時1970年もし二十歳だったら、
僕はマキの世界にどっぷりと浸りきっていたに違いない。
マキの歌声は、闇の中、粘りつくように溶けていく。
しかしそのどろどろした闇は妙に居心地がいい。

1970年、新宿。

空想の中で二十歳の僕は、闇の中心地よい眠りにつくのだ。

マキの子守歌に包まれて・・・。

このＣＤを聞くまでVO入りのジャズはあまり好きじゃなかったけど、初めてDARKNEESIジャスバージョンsideを聞いた時、一瞬でVO入りジャズが好きになりました！浅川マキさんの歌声はもちろん、それぞれの楽器のソロもすごくかっこいいし、とにかくもー最高です！
