チャート的には絶不調だった６０年代後期のソフト・ロック路線を押し進めた感じの作品で、イメージするビーチ・ボーイズとはちょっと違うかもしれないアルバム。イメージと違うというだけで作品の質はかなり高く、末永く付き合えるアルバムだと思います。７０年代のビーチ・ボーイズの曲で好きなものを３曲挙げろと言われれば誰しもが必ず選ぶであろう名曲、ディズニーガールはノスタルジックで旧き良き時代のアメリカの情景が浮かぶかのようなブルース・ジョンストンの代表作。絶対に外せない曲です。この作品以降、徐々にソフト・ロック路線はなくなっていくので、結果的には60年代を引きずった過渡期の作品と評価され、おまけに落ち武者みたいで気持ち悪いジャケのせいもあってか敬遠されがちですが、まず聞いてほしい作品です。タイトル曲は幻だったスマイルの収録予定曲で、ブライアン盤のスマイルにもリニューアルされて収録されました。

これは「ビーチボーイズのアビーロード」ではなかろうか。「ペットサウンズ」以来の実験的アプローチの決算報告であり、Ｂ面後半のブライアンワールドはディズニーランドを越えに越えて、「風の谷のナウシカ」の腐海へ到達した感がある。その神秘性は静寂（死）にもっとも近づいた音楽のみが持つ奇跡だろう。指揮者レナード・バーンスタインが激賞したといわれる作品でもある。

71年にリリースされたブラザー・レコード(配給元はリプリーズ)での2作目のアルバム。ビーチ・ボーイズのアルバムとしては間違いなくAクラスに入るはずの傑作だ。幻のアルバム『スマイル』のためにブライアン・ウィルソンとヴァン・ダイク・パークスが共作したタイトル曲の素晴らしさにあえて今さら言うまでもないだろうが、それと同時にカール・ウィルソンの健闘が目立つアルバムでもある。スマッシュ・ヒットしたシングル曲2、ブルース・ジョンストンが書いた未来のスタンダード曲4、ブライアンが提供した唯一の新曲9など名曲も多く、当時の時代背景や新しい手法を取り入れた5や6などでの意欲的な試みも評価できる。ビーチ・ボーイズといえば初期のサーフィン・ソングやホット・ロッド・チューンしか連想できない輩には羽交い締めにしてでも聴かせてやりたい名盤だ。
