　　「『ペット・サウンズ』以降のビーチボーイズは駄作ばかり。」
そんな話を聞いていたので、最近までこのアルバムに気がつかなかった。
　　この「サンフラワー」は、メンバーがそれぞれの力を持ち寄って、ブライアンが絶妙のセンスでまとめあげた、ビーチボーイズ中期の大傑作だ。
　　ブライアンが酒とドラッグで沈没してしまったことはビーチボーイズにとって痛手であったが、沈没したがゆえに他のメンバー達に、打席にたつチャンスが回ってきたことは、正にケガの功名だった。それに見事に応えてヒットを飛ばしたデニスとブルースはさすがである。
　　「ペットサウンズ」や「サーフィンＵＳＡ」だけがビーチボーイズではない！　と、昨日叫んでみた。

サンフラワーにはビーチボーイズの魅力のすべてがある。 まず、なによりもアルバムに溢れる元気の良さがいい！ サンフラワーのタイトル通りすべてが生き生きと輝いています。 彼等の全作品中で最も喜びに満ちたアルバムではないでしょうか。 このアルバムでのブライアンの存在もユニークです。 リードヴォーカルを取る曲こそありませんが

彼も元気いっぱいのバックコーラスで大活躍してます。 収録曲１２曲のうちブライアンは７曲でクレジットされてますが どれもすべて素晴らしい作品です。 ブルースジョンストンの曲やデニスウィルソンのFOREVERなど 他のメンバーの曲もそれに負けてはいません。 この『サンフラワー』がビーチボーイズの最高傑作であるという理由はそこです。

これはみんなで作ったアルバムなんだ！と心に伝わるものがあるのです。 ”ビーチボーイズにとってのサージェントペパーズ”まさにその通り！！

７０年発表。自身のレーベル、ブラザーからの第二弾。(第一弾はスマイリー・スマイル) おそらくこの時期のビーチボーイズは契約問題などでゴタゴタしていたのだろう。キャピトルからの移籍第一弾ということで、意欲的な姿勢が音に思いっきり出ていると思う。１．などはキャピトル時代終盤のソフト・ロック路線をよりメリ・ハリを付けて聞きやすく印象があり、それだけでも一皮剥けた感じがする。このアルバムからブルース・ジョンストンが、メンバーとして正式にクレジットされているが、その彼が提供した５．は名曲中の名曲。７．はミュゼット風ワルツの異色作。アメリカン・スプリングにブライアンが歌わせた９．もいわずもがなの名曲。スマイリー・スマイル以降の彼らの作品では最も分かりやすいメロディが満載の佳作だと思う。ちなみにこのアルバム「Add Some Music」なるアルバムを改作した作品らしい。
