ウッドベースで冒頭を飾るポール・サイモンの曲は、どこまでもダウナーで、よくあるキラーチューンをアルバムの顔である序曲にもってくることをしていない。2曲目からテンポが動き出すも、内省的な霧はそのまま立ち込めている。力強いあの声はさやに収めたままである。ピアノが入りようやく絵が見えてくる。

ライナーの筆者はこの冒頭2曲で今まで以上の傑作だと悟ったと書いてある。時の幻想、という言い方をしているが、確かに同感だ。彼女の歌声は50年代の空気感と現代のヴィヴィッドな空気感が同居させているようだし、その一声でリスナーに想起させる空間は、その部屋に時間的な跳躍を可能にさせている。
4「Ghosts」のギターの芳醇な香りには、約２分の短い時間でアメリカ的な郷愁を覚えさせる。かと思えばスタンダード5「Come Fly With Me」の歌声は洗練された現代に生きる彼女の感じ方で奏でられている。6のママス＆パパスの曲も“私は聴き手をいつもとは違う世界に誘い込むことが好き”ということばがそのまま表れていた。

今作では、彼女が長い時間推敲した熱の痕が感じられる。その成果は歌声の思慮深さ・表現の広がりだ。10「Make It Go Away」では“（上手くいかない歌入れでも）幾度も歌うことで歌から新たなエッセンスを汲み取る事を学んだ”という歌声は、今作で彼女が最も気に入ったテイクなのだという。12「Same Girl」では“エモーションを自分の内に消化しきることでシンプルにすることができた”と言うとおり、歌声の中に表現できることは何かをどんどん微分化してゆき、身に付けた説得力を感じてほしい。ビリー・ホリデーが晩年に獲得した、歌う意味、それを声の中に潜ませること、そういう芸当に彼女が一歩近づいていることを感じるラストの名曲だ。

本アルバムはポップス寄りの曲が多く、ジャズのアルバムのつもりで買うとガッカリする。
しかし、ポップスを歌う時のホリー・コールのヴォーカルもまた見事であって、ジャズという拘りを外せば、彼女のヴォーカルを楽しめるアルバムになっていると思う。

“コーリング・ユー”しか知らないので
ステキなジャケットの“シャレード”でも聴いてみようかと思っていたのに
まるでロックアーティストの作品のような
このジャケットを目の前にして気が変わった。

ポップ調ジャズという先入観はあっても
どこか陰りのある歌声はポップスというよりR&Bに聴こえる。

１曲目と１２曲目で使われるドブロギターの音色が
この作品への想いを象徴しているかもしれないが
最初の間奏部は、まさにブルースそのものといった感じでシブイ!!

最後で聴かせるドブロからピアノに変わる瞬間の
ゾクゾクするような感覚と
とことん暗い、地を這うような歌唱こそ
私の好きなホリー・コールのスタイルだ。

表現力豊かというか
最近の似たり寄ったりのスタンダードジャズ歌手とは
やっぱりちょっとレベルがちがうか・・・。
