このアルバムは、前作「ＬＯＷ」と同様、イーノとのコラボレーションです。前作では、イーノの影響が大きく、エレクトリカルな側面が強調されていましたが、今作では、あのロバート・フリップがギターで参加しており、２０００年のＣrimsonのコンサートでは、アンコールの最後の曲となっていました。「ヒーローズ」の歌詞を某評論家は「誰でもヒーローになれるという意味」と馬鹿な事を言っていましたが、録音場所は、統一前の西ベルリン、歌詞の「standing by The Wall」の「The Wall」はベルリンの壁を表しており、私は、東西に引き裂かれた男女の悲しみを歌っていると思いました。ボウイの詩は、難解さでは、最もプログレッシブであると思います。後半のインスト３曲続きは、友人「マーク・ボラン」の死を悼んで作られたと聞きます。最後のサックスの泣き声は、ボウイの悲しみの表れなのでしょう。これではあまりに暗い終わり方なので、最後に明るい曲を持ってきた、というのは、うがった見方でしょうか？
どちらにせよ、前作と共に、傑作です。

このアルバムは「ロウ」と併せて聴くべきで、2作がボウイの最高傑作だと思います。やはりブライアン・イーノとロバート・フィリップの参加が大きく作品の質を上げています。何よりも知性、ボウイの知性の高さを感じるアルバムです。知能指数200以上ですね、絶対。

ボウイの最高傑作アルバムは『ジギー・スターダスト』だと私も思いますが、では「デビッド・ボウイ」から一番先にイメージするのは、ジャケットも含めてこの作品だったりします。
前作『ロウ』と繋がりが深く、また同時期のイギー・ポップ『ラスト・フォー・ライフ』も併せて聴くと、ボウイの天才性をこれでもかと感じられます（筈）。
3は、ボウイの代表曲であり、たしか歴史に残る名曲、みたいなアンケートでも上位に選ばれていました（うろ覚え）。
ジャケット撮影は鋤田正義氏。ボウイ自身が最も気に入っている時期の作品との事。
名盤です。
