1986年発表の大ヒット作です。プロデュースにはジェネシスと８０年代ジェネシスの名パートナーであるヒュー・パジャムがあたっています。シングルカットされた「インヴィジブル・タッチ」「スローイング・イット・オール・アウェイ」などポップな曲に混じって「トゥナイト・トゥナイト・トゥナイト」「ドミノ」などのジェネシスらしいスケールの大きな曲も混じっています。フィル・コリンズのソロやマイク・ラザフォードのマイク＆ザ・メカニックスでの経験がうまく活かされており、ポップでありながら重厚というジェネシスにしかなしえない素晴らしい作品に仕上がっています。

ジェネシスのベスト盤はフィル期のポップさばかり伝えていて、フィル期のアルバムのトータルバランス面の凄さを伝えていない。下手にベスト盤を聴くよりも、本作を聴いた方がフィル期の全体像がかえってよく分かると思う。
プログレっぽい（これが大事！）変拍子を多用した組曲と、ポップなヒットシングルを織り交ぜた、ヴォリュームと楽しさに溢れた名作。素直に聴いていて楽しい。ガブリエル期の模倣をテクニカルな組曲の作成にとどめ、自分の長所である明るさが前面に出されている点が、良い意味でガブリエル期と全く一線を画していて良い。なんか弟子が師匠ののれんを引き継ぎつつ、独自の味を出せているようなほほえましい感想を受ける。私はガブリエル派ですが、素直にフィル期も素晴らしいと認めます。

端的にいえばポップとして極上の完成度を持つアルバムである。
フィルの最も絶頂の時期においてジェネシスのアルバムとして発表された本作品は｢easy lover｣ ｢no jackt required｣等のながれを組みながらもジェネシスサウンドに仕上がった作品である。この作品はプログレ時代のファンにとっては不満があると思われるが、ポップサウンドを聞きたいという方にとってはこれ以上ないほど満足をお約束できるアルバムであり、そして切れ味、斬新さを持ったアルバムである。
アルバム自体は超ロングセラーし、全米３位を最高位とし年間ランクにおいては８６年は４０位、続く８７年は１０位を記録している。
また、このアルバムからはシングルとして｢invisible touch｣全米１位　 ｢tonight tonight tonight｣全米３位 ｢land of confusion｣全米４位｢into deep｣全米３位 ｢throw it all away｣４位　の計５枚のシングル大ヒットが生まれている。
ＡＯＲファンやエレクトリックサウンドの好きな方にはたまらない音の作りになっており、特にみごとに活用されたエレクトリックドラムの音が時代の中で輝くポップサウンド感を感じさせる。ぜひ、一家に一枚ほしいアルバムである
