リチャード・マークスといえば、知っている曲がRight Here WaitingとNow
and Foreverぐらいだった。そして、私の持っているサマンサ・コールのデビ
ューアルバムには、リチャードと共作した壮大なバラードWithout You、そし
てリチャード＆サマンサのデュエットのセンチメンタルなバラードSurrender
to Meが入っている。また、最近ではインシンクのバラードThis I Promise

Youがリチャードの曲だった。そして、この前グラミーを獲ったルーサー・
ヴァンドロスのDance with My Father。
というわけで、彼は、なんだか似たようなバラードばかり書く人だと思ってい
たため、オフィシャルＨＰで今までのアルバム全てを試聴した私は、じっさい
物凄くびっくりしてしまったのである。ロックが多い！！

全て試聴した結果気に入ったこのファーストアルバムなのだが、いかにも８０
年代！というサウンドである。聴いてるだけで、やたらボリュームのある髪×
黒の革ジャン×ジーンズの格好のアメリカ人達の姿が浮かんでくるぐらい。
ハードではないけど、リリックスやアヴリルのように軽いサウンドでもない、

中位の（ボンジョヴィをもっとポップ寄りにした感じ）ロックサウンドが中心。
８０ｓらしく、キャッチーな曲が続く。典型的８０ｓサウンドだけれども、
なかなかカッコいいナンバーが多い。元気の出る一枚である。バラードでは
（後にベスト盤でリチャード自身がコメントしているように）今ほどハスキー
でない彼のヴォーカルが聴けるので貴重かも。

リチャード・マークスのデビュー盤。後にバラードでヒット曲を量産する彼ですが、このデビュー盤ではWest Coast Rockで売り出したかったのか、彼にしてはハードなナンバーが並びます。ジョー・ウォルシュのうなるスライドを始め、イーグルスの面々のバックアップもあって、ロック界の新星といった趣。サウンドも80年代らしいキャッチーなメロディーにぶ厚いプロダクション。悪く言えば売れ筋。でも薄っぺらでなく懐の深さを感じさせるのはソングライティングの勝利でしょうか。

デヴュー作だけど
それまでに多くのアーチストに楽曲を
提供しているだけあって、完成された
内容だと思います。
いま聴けばベタなところも感じられるが、
キャッチーなメロディーが心地よい元気なアルバム。
＊でも顔おおきい＊
