ビートルズの作品を聞く楽しみは、音楽性がアルバム毎に変化してゆく驚きである。音楽と同時に、詞やジャケットの表情やファッションなど一緒に変わってゆく。デビュー作の「プリーズ・プリーズ・ミー」からここまで辿り付いた時、ここから一段と大きく音楽が変化し始める。

　個人的には、大きなターニングポイントになったこの作品には、ジョンの役割が大きいと考えている。
　有名な「ノルウェーの森」「イン・マイ・ライフ」「ひとりぼっちのあいつ」「ガール」というジョンの名曲がビートルズの音楽の方向性に大きく影響を与えたと思う。ジョンの声も何かしら思索的に聞こえる。
ジョージの才能も徐々に発揮しはじめ、ジョージらしい軽快な曲、「恋をするなら」が入っている。
世界を巡業していたアイドル・バンドが、いよいよ自らの音楽を完成させるべく視点を変え始めたことが伺える。

「ラバー・ソウル」で大きく旋回し始めたビートルズは、次の「リボルバー」
そして「サージェント・ペッパー」で頂点に達する。

「サージェント・ペッパー」もこの作品から聞き始めると一段と味わい深くなるだろう。

1963年12月3日に発売されたこのアルバムRubber Soulは、ビートルズのアルバムの中でも好きな作品の1枚です。

前作Helpまで多く含まれていたストレートなラヴソングから、歌詞やメロディーに変化が感じられ、曲を聴く楽しみだけではなく、歌詞を読んで楽しんだり、何度も何度も繰り返し聴いてきました。

中でも名曲"In My Life"は、Rod StewartやBette Midlerがカバーするなど、多くの人々に愛された1曲です。
Rod StewartやBette Midlerのファンの方もオリジナルの"In My Life"を聴いてみてください。

「さてビートルズを聴いてみよう」と思った時に、
その音源の多さに途方に暮れる人も多いと思います。

一枚目から順に聴くのもテですが、
まずこの＜ラバーソウル＞を聴いてみれば、
おのずと他の作品も聴きたくなること請け合いです。

ビートルズは古臭いと思っている人も、
ビートルズは小難しいと思っている人も、

ビートルズは教科書的音楽だと思っている人も、
このアルバムを聴いて、
必ず1曲はお気に入りの曲を見つけられると思います。

一曲ずつの時間も短めですし、
アルバム全体としても短くまとまった作品です。
とっかかりとしてぜひおススメします。

耳あたりは難しくないのに何度も聴くと奥深い、
そんな得がたい特色を持ったアルバムです。
