１９８３年にリリースされたデビュー・フル・アルバムです。この頃からライヴを活発化した彼らは「Police」等の前座でツアーを回り、知名度を上げていきます。そして既に人気者となっていた彼らは、インディ・レーベルからのデビューとしては信じられない位の評価を受け、「Rolling Stone」誌の評論家による「ベスト・オブ・ザ・イヤー」に選ばれる事となります。デビュー・シングル「Radio Free Europe」のニュー・テイクを収録し、シングル・カットするや一気にカレッジ・チャートを駆け上り、ＵＫでも「Talk About The Passion」がシングル・カットされ、インディ・チャートの上位にランキングされました。フォーク・タッチのアコースティック・ギターを中心としたサウンド、Punkに影響を受けたザラついたサウンドながらも、ルーツ的なスタイルを忘れないサウンドと、Michael Stipeのテキサスなまりの強いヴォーカル・スタイルは、好き嫌いが分かれるものと思いきや、大きな支持を受けることとなります。アメリカン・インディ・ロックの先駆けとして、非常に重要なアルバムであることは間違いないですね。既に名盤の誉れ高い作品！
