　この頃のポールと言えば、前作品"Flowers In The Dirt"ばかり誉められている印象がありますが、本作品は個人的にはポールのソロ作品でもベスト3にはいるほどの名盤と思ってます。前作品に参加したコステロの影響か、全体にタイトなバンド・アレンジで、Wings時代のような甘い感じが無いですね。メロディも、総じて美しい。正直どのアルバムでも飛ばして聴かない曲がありますが、これは全曲好きです。このアルバムの為のセッションで録音された曲も「なんでボツになったの？」と不思議になるようなものばかりなので、それらをまとめて収録した2枚組の「コンプリート・ワークス」を探すべきでしょう。

　前作「フラワーズ・イン・ザ・ダート」を引っさげての嵐のワールド・ツアーを終えて、ほぼそのバンド・メンバーで腰を据えて作られた力作。このアルバムも明らかに「次のツアー」それを見据えて作られていて、ファンとしては「早くライヴで聴きたい！」そう思わせられる曲が並んでいました。
　

　そしてその期待どうり、’９３年の日本公演も含むワールド・ツアーではこのアルバムからのナンバーも数多く演奏され前作の時以上にオーディエンスに歓迎されたのでした。その模様はライヴ・アルバム「ポール・イズ・ライヴ」で聴くことが出来ます。ぜひ確かめてみてください。

８９年から９０年にかけてのワールド・ツアーの大成功で、ポールはやる気が起きたようです。ＭＴＶアンプラグドやネブワースへの出演など、元気な姿を見ることが出来ました。ポールはツアー・バンドを気にいっていたのでしょう。そのメンバーでレコーディングされたのが、この「オフ・ザ・グラウンド」。ポールのファンとしては、ポールが活動を活発化させて、何か期待が膨らんだものです。実際、ポールらしさが味わえる作品が多くてうれしい限り。1のタイトル曲がビートルズ、ウイングスの頃を彷彿させるような自信漲るサウンドでワクワクする。今に続く、ポールの活躍を予感させるアルバムだと思います。ファンにはお勧めな作品。
