　このアルバムもなんとなく全体に「鬱」なムードが漂っているのですが、それでもそれが「ロンドンタウン」の時のように作品に間延びした感じで出るのではなく、逆に作品をパワフルなものにしているように思います。特にロック・ナンバーの迫力は彼の全アルバムの中でも抜きん出ています。

　Ｂ面で久しぶりに聴かせるメドレーは「ハードもメロウもお手の物」というポールならではのお楽しみ。アナログラストの「ベイビーズ・リクエスト」には当時親交のあったサディスティック・ミカ・バンドの福井ミカさんへの秘密のメッセージが込められているそうです。ＣＤは「ワンダフル・クリスマスタイム」が入っているのがお買い得！

ウイングスのラストアルバム。せっかくメンバー一新したのに、ロケストラの超豪華ゲストに喰われて統一性に欠ける、などと、発表当時は評判悪かったけれど、これは間違いなく良いです。確かに新メンバーのお披露目となった先行シングル盤「グッドナイト・トゥナイト/デイタイム・ナイタイム・サファーリング」がめちゃくちゃ気合入った完璧な出来で、こりゃアルバムはすげ~ぞ、と期待させすぎたのかもしれません。ただ、そんな時代背景的条件を抜きにして今聴くと、非常にポールらしいパワフルさに溢れた、魅力的なアルバムと言えます。中でも、全く有名ではない曲ですが「ウィンター・ローズ~ラヴ・アウェイク」がおススメです。数あるポールのバラードの中で、この曲のヴォーカルスタイルは、それまでのキャリアには無い、ポールが新たに開発した新境地なのです。ちょっとくぐもった感じで、引きずるように歌うんですが、これが素晴らしい！このアルバム以降、「ウォーターフォールズ」や、「ゴールデン・アース・ガール」などへと引き継がれる名曲です。必聴ですよ！

Wings Greatestでそれまでのキャリアを総括したあと、80年代にむけての新たな一歩を踏み出したのウィングスの勢いがそのままぶつけられたアルバムだ。当時考えられる最高のミュージシャンを一同に集めたロケストラによるロケストラのテーマ、So Glad の圧倒的な迫力、Spin It On のスピード、胸がキュンくる Arrow Through Me などどれをとっても魅力あふれる楽曲ばかりだ。

本作のクライマックスは、ポール得意の2部構成による 10: After The Ball / Million Miles 11: Winter Rose / Love Awake ではないかと思う。ここでコンサート、アルバムが一応の終了を迎えるという演出になっているが、どんなことでもいい、なにかいままで経験したことのないことを様々な困難を乗り越えて成し遂げたようなときにこれを聴くとより大きな充実感をえられるだろう。このような優しく大きな包容力をもったロックはまさにポールの真骨頂なのだ。
