Wingsの中でも静かな印象があるこのアルバムですが、私はすごく気に入ってます。特に1曲目"London Town"は、ロンドンの曇り空が思い浮かぶようなサウンド。"With A Little Luck"はやさしく美しいメロディとポールのヴォーカルが心に沁みます。"Girlfirend"、"Cafe on the left bank"、"I'm carrying"など、どれも「空気感」を大切にしたような曲が多いと思います。

ちょうど曇り空の日に、聴きながらクルマの中で、１人でボーっと海でも眺めていたいような、そんな気分になるアルバムです。

「ロンドンタウン」はポールのアルバムの中では評価があまり芳しくないものとされている。しかし、曲自体を聴いてみるとそんなに悪くない。逆に気合を入れて作った「バック･トゥ･ジ･エッグ」より数段いい曲が収録されている。ヒット曲は「幸せの予感」だけかもしれないが、表題曲の「ロンドンタウン」やマイケルジャクソンがカバーした「ガールフレンド」など聞き応えがある曲が多い。アルバム全体の統一感もあり、ぼくは好きなアルバムの一枚である。評判に惑わされず、是非聞いてほしいアルバムである。

ウイングスの作品の中では、異色と言えます。
「With A Little Luck」という大ヒット曲が目立っていますが、収録曲のほぼ半数が非常にトラッド色の強いアレンジ。もちろんポール一人でもトラッドなナンバーは作れるのですが、敢えてデニー・レインのアイデアを盛り込むことにより、ウイングスの新しい魅力が感じられるアルバムに仕上がっています。アコースティックギターのアンサンブルが抜群で、この時の試みが、後にポールが作った「Somebody Who Care」や「Put It There」などの楽曲に反映されており、そういった意味でも要チェックのアルバムでしょう。
もちろん、従来のウイングスサウンドで押しまくる「Cafe On The Left Bank」や、ちょっとひねった進行が味わい深いタイトル曲「London Town」など、トラッドが苦手な人でも充分満足できる秀作も満載。ベスト盤では聴けない名曲がたくさんあります。
難点は、ちょっと冗長な感じがすることでしょうか。余計なことを考えずに、ボケ~っと聴くのがいいかもしれません。
