   ウイングス最大のヒット作にして最高傑作となったアルバム『Band On The Run』（邦題『バンド・オン・ザ・ラン』）の興奮冷めやらぬ時期にリリースされたとあって、本作『Venus & Mars』にはすっかり調子を取り戻したポール・マッカートニーの姿がある。再び黄色い悲鳴を浴びる現役ロック・スターとなったポールは、青春の最後の輝きを楽しんでいるようだ。ファンの歓声は常にポールから最良のものを引き出す。そして本作は、より大きな賞賛を勝ち取っている前作と比べても、ほとんどひけを取らない出来ばえとなった。

   ポールは自らのお気に入りのテーマである“セックス、ドラッグ、ロックン・ロール、そして結婚”から決して離れないが、「Listen To What The Man Said（あの娘におせっかい）」や「Letting Go（ワイン・カラーの少女）」のような華麗で軽快なナンバーに陽気な卑わいさを加味させる手法からは、彼の自信がはっきりと伝わってくる。「Rock Show」は、ザ・フーの「Long Live Rock（不死身のハードロック）」と並ぶ抱腹絶倒の自画自賛ソングとして70年代を代表するものだ。

   本作の楽曲のうちでやや出来の落ちるものは、メロディーとアレンジを事もなげに操るポールの手腕によって救われている。出来のいいものは、ポールが本来の活力を取り戻したことを随所に感じさせる。軽薄で勝手気ままなのに、まったく嫌味がないのだ。ただし、「Crossroads（クロスロードのテーマ）」だけは邪悪な味つけがなされている。（Taylor Parkes, Amazon.co.uk）

５人編成となった新生ウイングス、ここでもイニシアチブは完全にポールが握っているけれど、バンドサウンドとしても傑出した完成度の高いアルバムに仕上がっています。ポールは前作「BAND ON THE RUN」で、アルバムプロデュースに独自のスタンスを確立、とにかくこのアルバムでも、曲順の並びが完璧。僕がポールのアルバム作りで最も評価するのは、まさにその点。特に、３曲目にアコースティックな小品をはさみこむ構成が好きで、ここでは「LOVE IN SONG」がそれに当たります。（「BAND ON THE RUN」では「BLUEBIRD」、「TUG OF WAR」では「SOMEBODY WHO CARES」、「LONDON TOWN」では「I'M CARRYING」とかね）
美しすぎる「VENUS AND MARS」に始まり、壮大なエンディングまで、トータルでしみじみとしたい傑作。このアルバムに限っては、ボーナストラックはちょっと邪魔だなぁ。

アラントゥーサンがピアノを弾いている2曲目「ロックショー」が絶品。ウイングスのベストトラック候補だろう。
他にも傑作、佳作がならび、ウイングス全盛期をかざる快作だ。

もう一枚、この路線でいってほしかったが、このひとはそういうことをいさぎよしとしないんだな。

それにしてもヴィーナスアンドマース〜ロックショーのメドレー、これほど夢をみさせくれる展開もそうはない。
ほんとにたいしたものだ。

ポールのというより、ウイングスが光り輝いていたときの一枚。「バンド･オン･ザ･ラン」と並び称されて当たり前の名盤。一曲一曲の出来では、こちらのほうがいいと思います。ポールもウイングス時代のライブでは、このアルバムからの選曲が多かったと思います。最初のビーナス・アンド・マースからロックショーにつながるメドレーはまさにポール・マッカートニーの代名詞といえるものです。（よほど「アビイロード」ので気が気に入っているとしか思えません。）ビートルズ以降もポールの爆発が続いていることを証明した一枚、チェックすべし。
