人種が違えば声帯もあごの構造も違うから当然の事だが、黒人女性の粘っこい歌い方と異なる白人女性ボーカルのハスキーな甘い、そしてやや不感症っぽい雰囲気が好きだ。もちろんエラ・フィッツジェラルドやサラ・ボーン、カーメン・マックレーの声量や高音、金属的な肉声も捨てがたい。しかし、ここで紹介するジューン・クリスティーは名前のイメージもあいまって、透き通ったようなクールでさわやかなムードがたまらない。標題曲のサムシング・クールは50年代の古きよき時代のボーカルのユートピアを感じさせてくれる。ミッドナイト・サンも深夜に聞くと、白夜のようなイメージの曲に聞こえる。「朝日のようにさわやかに」、「アイ・シュッド・ケア」といった名曲が次々とやさしく語りかけてくれる。知名度ではヘレン・メリル、実力的にはアニタ・オデイには及ばなかったかもしれないが、このアルバムで彼女の名は不滅のものになった。それにしてもクリスティーはもとより、クリス・コナーなど50年代ってどうしてこんなに素敵な女性ボーカリストが多かったのだろう。

スタン・ケントン楽団のヴォーカリストだったジューン・クリスティのただ一枚の名盤。かわいいクールな声の歌手だが晩年は恵まれなかったそうだ。エラ、サラ、白人だったらヘレン・メリルなどの大歌手の陰で、わずか１枚のアルバムを残して消えていった女性歌手はクリスティーに限らず多い。そんな裏話を思い浮かべつつ聴くと少しブルーになる。ともあれ、表題曲以外のどの曲もいい。毎日ではなくとも、時々取り出して聴きたくなる一枚。（松本敏之）
