金管楽器上、現在もっとも新しい楽器であるユーフォニアム。
耳を間違えれば、トロンボーンともホルンとも聴こえる。
しかし、日本の第一人者である彼のCDからは、音の塊が放たれる。それはまるで大砲のようだ。
ユーフォニアムのための楽曲が少ないため、ある奏者はピアノの流れるような旋律をテクニックで吹く場合もある。
しかし、外囿氏にはそのような細工は必要ない。
なぜなら、この楽器を最も良く知り尽くし、
「これがユーフォニアム」という臨場感溢れる演奏をしてくれるからだ。
スイスのウィルソン、本場イギリスのベッソンに次ぐ、日本製YAMAHAユーフォニアムの楽器製作に助言を与える。「ホカゾノモデル」として世界へ発信する日も近いという。
初めて吹奏楽部で「名前も知らない楽器」に当たった皆さん、是非彼のこのCDを聴いて、この楽器を大好きになって欲しい。
