それ程色々と聴き比べたことがある訳でもないが、RVWの交響曲はボールト指揮のものが一番好きだ。多くのRVW作品の初演を彼が担当したと云う理由で特別な思い入れがあると云う訳では全くないのだが、他の者の演奏では何故かそれ程感じない、貴族らしい優雅さや、古風で洗練された感じに何とも言えず惹かれてしまうのだ。イギリス風の神秘主義を、深刻になり過ぎず、気品を保った儘きちんと表現し尽くしてくれているところなぞは正に名人芸で、RVWの作風にもぴったりマッチしていると思う。いい意味で英国の土性骨を感じる演奏だ。

　思い返せば十代の頃、修学旅行先で手に入れた彼の手になる4番と6番を、憑かれたかの如く毎日の様に聴いていた時期があった。正に私の「青春の名盤」である。それがどっさり纏めてまた聴けて、しかもこんな値段で自宅にいた儘手に入るなんて、便利で嬉しい世の中になったものである。
