「五度」の冒頭から、この演奏の完成度の高さを感じずにはいられない。スピードときらびやかさを兼ね備えた音色と、前へ前へと進むテンポ感は全曲にわたって切れ味鋭く、爽快。ハイドンの中でも最もポピュラーなエルディーディ四重奏のうちの３曲を収めたこのアルバム、ハイドン＝古典という概念を打ち破るにふさわしい、究極のハイドンと言える名演である。

現在この２枚のＣＤに収められたハイドンの６曲の『エルデーディ四重奏曲集作品７６、１−６』は残念ながら廃盤の憂き目にあっているが、幸い日本ではニックネーム付の『五度』、『皇帝』そして『日の出』の３曲は復活し、『ラルゴ』を含む残りの３曲を収めた１枚も欧米で別売されている。円熟期の作曲家ならではの職人技とも言うべき手馴れた楽器法と曲中での巧みな対位法処理や随所に聴かれる天才的な閃きとも言える機智に富んだ楽想の豊かさがこの曲集を非常に魅力的なものにしている。アルバン・ベルク四重奏団のこれらの曲に対する解釈は緻密で理性的だが、それでいて決して深刻にならないクールな表現と適度な快活さを併せ持っている。ハイドンの楽想の輪郭をこれほど鮮明に再現した演奏も珍しい。録音は２、３及び４番が１９９３年と９４年、また１、５、６番が９８年でどちらも音質は極めて良好。尚、同四重奏団のもう１枚のハイドン・シリーズがＥＭＩから出ていてこちらには作品３３の『鳥』と作品７７から１、２番が収録されている。
