　指揮者クレンペラーの考えにより、劇の台詞がすべてカットされています。従って、序曲から始まって、アリア、アンサンブル、合唱によって構成され、進んでいく演奏。また、本ＣＤに歌詞対訳は付いていません。おおよそのあらすじが解説書に記されているだけなので、このオペラを初めて聴く方には、まず、ショルティ指揮ウィーン・フィル（1969年録音）の台詞の入った演奏をおすすめします。ショルティ盤は、録音もやわらかくて聴き心地満点ですし、ヘルマン・プライのパパゲーノや、ゲルハルト・シュトルツェのモノスタトスといった男声歌手陣の生き生きとした歌いぶりが、とても魅力的だからです。
　で、こちら、1964年３月〜４月録音の２枚組ＣＤ。男声歌手陣がぱっとしないのに比べて（なかでも、ゴットロープ・フリックのザラストロ。全く冴えなかったなあ）、女声歌手陣が非常に見事な歌を聴かせています。ルチア・ポップの夜の女王が聴きたくて購入したのですが、24歳という若さだった彼女の声と歌は確かに素敵でした。チャーミングで初々しく、華を感じる夜の女王のアリア。でも、それ以上に見事な歌を聴かせていたのが、録音当時26歳のグンドラ・ヤノヴィッツでした。鈴を振るわせるように透き通って軽やかな声といい、やわらかな歌い回しといい、とびっきり魅力的なパミーナでした。そのほか、「魔笛」を吹いているフルート奏者の演奏、ルート＝マルグレート・ピュッツのパパゲーナ、エリザベート・シュワルツコップの第一の侍女、アグネス・ギーベルの第一の少年（この三人は、いずれもソプラノ歌手）の歌が印象に残りました。

クレンペラー独特の音符運びが堪らない。音に厚みがあり、オペラ全体を包み込むように曲を乗せる。
これだけ芳醇な魔笛は他にないのではないか、という感覚すら覚える。

演奏だけで心地よいのに、それに加えてアリアはルチア・ポップ。
1964年と言えば彼女はまだデビューしてホヤホヤと言ったところだが、余りにも完成されたアリアに感動。
夜の女王は娘(パミーナ)を奪われ、そしてザラストロを憎む母親という役ながら、ポップの持つ声の暖かさがその役どころを何も阻害していないのが凄い。
もちろんポップ以外のキャスティングも豪華。このクオリティで映像まであったらどんなに素晴らしいだろうか。
尚、このCDはセリフの部分が無いので、ドライブしながら聴いたりするのにも向いているかも知れない。

『クレンペラー』のキーワードでこの商品が検索にヒットしないのは大問題だと思う。
こんな名演を知らずに魔笛を通り過ぎる人がたくさんいるかと思うと心が痛みます。

　歌手はすごいです。おもな配役はタミーナ/ゲッダ、パミーナ/ヤノヴィッツ、パパゲーノ/ベリー、夜の女王/ポップ、ザラストロ/フリック、侍女1/シュワルツコップ。指揮/クレンペラー、フィルハーモニア。僕の耳のせいかもしれないが、合唱の音が濁っているというか、割れてるというか・・・録音技術の問題かもしれない。とにかく聴いて損はないでしょう。特にポップはまだ24才、ヤノヴィッツは26才という若さ！美しいです。
