あまりに美しく整っていて、泥臭さはやや薄くなっていますが、黒人霊歌独特のリズムや節回しを生かしつつ、重厚なハーモニーで敬虔な雰囲気を醸し出しています。サリ・テリーのソロも表現力豊かですばらしい。

ロジェー・ワーグナーが健在だった頃、ロジェー・ワーグナー合唱団の演奏を聴いたことがあります。１９７９年の日本公演でした。メゾ･ソプラノのサリー・テリーも同行しており、このＣＤにも収録されている「汝はそこに　WERE　YOU　THERE？」の名演奏を目の当たりにしました。合唱団の人数は３０名程度だったと思いますが、重厚なハーモニーは、レコードの演奏同様、感動的でした。

「汝はそこに」は、主イエスキリストの受難を歌った黒人霊歌の中でも荘重な趣をもった敬虔な曲であるのは間違いないと思います。編曲も担当したサリー・テリーのソロが、敬虔な思いを聞き手に激しく伝えてくれます。

６曲目の「鐘の音に」や１１曲目の「友よ、糧を分けよう」の比類ない美しさを持った名演を現在でもＣＤで聴く事ができるのは本当にありがたく思っています。このような深い精神性を実際歌うのは難しいことで、「スピリチュアル」を今歌われる多くの若い世代に聴いて欲しい演奏です。

黒人霊歌は「魂の叫び」とよく表現されます。アメリカの奴隷制度の支配化の元、過酷な環境にあった彼らが、現世の苦悩を逃れるため、「聖書」に救いを求め、それを歌として表現しました。だだ、それらの苦悩を昇華した後には、「Were you there ?」のような敬虔な深い宗教的感動があるように思います。
昔からの定番の演奏です。得られる感動は決して風化していません。

全体的に重厚で悲痛、文字通り魂の叫びという感じ。どん底に落ち込んでいるときに聴くと最大の癒しが得られるのではないだろうか。感情がめちゃくちゃ入ってます。サリーテリーもビブラート効いていて神懸かり的です。６曲目の「鐘の音に」など、ぶっとんでいます。団員の約１名が明らかに興奮して声が裏返るような叫ぶようなトランス状態に陥っているようなのです。しかも、それが全然じゃまになっていない！
でも、元気なときに聴くと重すぎるのでご注意を。
