若い時代の実験的なミュージック・コンクレートから、晩年の調性に回帰したかのような緻密な音の綾織り全てに、武満はその時代を背負った武満として存在していたわけですが､この「カシオペア」はツトム・ヤマシタという稀有な才能を得て結晶した広大な音宇宙が縦横無尽に展開されています。宇宙が無から誕生した際に生じたかのような太古の響きと、その後に続く星雲と惑星の誕生を見ているかのような気持ちにさせられます。これは音楽というより原始の音の誕生というべきものではないでしょうか。

もうこの作品について書くなんてことは時代遅れもはなはだしいかもしれませんが、何回聴いても、この作品のあまりの質の高さに驚愕の念を禁じえないのです。
武満はその後80年代に完全に変質してしまいました。それ以前と以後では全く別人です。そして現在演奏される作品といえば、その変質後の作品かレクイエムぐらいなものでしょう。
いまや、それ以前の名作であるカシオペアやアステリズム、テクスチュアズ（アーク）はCDでしか聞けません。
そうであるならば、なお更に、このような貴重なCDを長く聴くしかないのでしょう。美と暴力の結晶を音楽作品で聴いてみたいとお思いになる方にお勧めの作品です。
