   ジョージ・ルイスは40年代のニューオリンズ・リヴァイヴァルによって再発見されたクラリネット奏者。ニューオリンズ・リヴァイヴァルは、ウィリアム・ラッセルが41年にニューオリンズでバンク・ジョンソンを再発見したのを機に広がったムーヴメント。当時ルイスはニューオリンズで港湾労働者として働く一方、演奏も行なっていたが、バンク・ジョンソンの録音に参加して評判になり、その後バンクを凌ぐ人気者になった。初期のニューオリンズ・ジャズはシカゴに移ってディキシーランド・ジャズに姿を変えたが、ルイスの演奏はニューオリンズ直系のジャズであり、それが大いに歓迎された。
   本作は54年にオハイオ州立大学で行なったコンサートの実況盤。キッド・ハワードやジム・ロビンソンなどの仲間とともに、元気いっぱいの演奏を繰り広げている。暖かい音色の素朴なプレイ、それがルイスの魅力だ。ローレンス・マレロのバンジョーをフィーチャーした「世界は日の出を待っている」が本作の目玉曲。たしかにこれは素晴らしい大熱演だ。（市川正二）

　ジャズを聴き始めてしばらくすると，時代によって演奏スタイルに違いがあると気づくものです。ジャズにはジャズの歴史があるってね。
　で，それぞれの時代に名演奏家がいるわけで，そのスタイルが古いという理由で切り捨ててしまうのはもったいないことです。
　ニューオーリンズはジャズ発祥の地。１９２０年代そこで生まれ出た音楽がどんなものだったのか，ジョージ・ルイスの演奏は教えてくれます。そして，その素朴な力強さに驚かされ魅了されます。
　というわけで，ジャズファンなら折に触れ帰りたくなる故郷のような作品だと思いますよ。
