北海道発の人気番組「水曜どうでしょう」の予告で使用されているあのやけに緊張感のある曲が、このサントラの「ギャオス逃げ去る」という曲です。ほんと名曲です。札幌が舞台の「ガメラ２」にはなんと！番組出演者がエキストラ出演とガメラさんとは縁のある「水曜どうでしょう」さんですが、このサントラも全国のどうでしょう必須の品として一部の皆さんにおすすめします。

「ガメラ　大怪獣空中決戦」はシンプルな正統派怪獣映画といった感じの作品ですが、音楽も同様で、重量感あふれる迫力ある曲が主体となっています。
この後、主体となる音楽は２、３と作品の雰囲気が変わっていくのに合わせて変化していきますが、重低音楽器を主体とした１の音楽は三部作の中で最も力強く、無難な出来です。
また２や３では重要なシーンでのみ流れていたテーマ曲が本作では随所で流れていることも特徴です。
平成の世に甦ったガメラを象徴するという意味があったのでしょう。
爆風スランプによる主題歌「神話」は重低音楽器を主体とした大谷氏の音楽に合わせてレコーディングし直されたものだそうです。
白熱した雰囲気の中に、子供から大人へ成長していくにつれて大切な物をいくつも失ってしまうことの切なさが歌われているなかなかいい歌ですが、１の劇中にそういった要素がないためにあまり合っていません。
しかし主題歌も作品に合わせて変化していき、金子修介監督が作詞、さらに大谷幸自らが作曲し、ユリアーナ・シャノーが歌った３主題歌「もういちど教えてほしい」は暗く凄惨な３に希望を与えてくれる名曲に仕上がっていますから、発展途上だったのだと考えれば何とか許せる範囲でしょう。

”もう一方の”怪獣王の、まさにオーソドックスなスタイルでの復活！
そのために用意された映画音楽もまた、まさに王道を行く、重厚・スペクタクルな、オーケストラ音楽です。
ガメラのテーマ曲、調査・探索、自衛隊の作戦行動、怪獣の出現・破壊・対決の音楽など、聴いていてわくわくしてきます。
特に、「13.ギャオス逃げ去る」は、そのヤマ場がTVCMや予告編でも頻繁に使われた、
福岡ドームでガメラが回転ジェットで去るときの曲が俄然、盛り上がります！
またこの曲は、北海道で放送されたバラエティ番組「水曜どうでしょう」の予告で使われたことでも有名です。
「28. エンディング・テーマ〜海へ 」はコーラスも交え、雄大・穏やかで感動的。最後の鳴き声まで収録されてます。
エンディングで、クレジットに流れた主題歌「29. 主題歌「神話」(爆風スランプ) 」も収録していて、その点でもポイント高し。

オールカラー12ページの付属ブックレット(解説書)には、ストーリー、映画解説、「神話」歌詞、大谷幸プロフィール、写真などを掲載。
ちなみに初回封入特典は、ちょっと小型の「ガメラメタルステッカー」でした。
