初めて彼らの楽曲に接したときの衝撃は､いまだに忘れられない｡

誰もが本来持っている､物事の欺瞞に対する怒り､それが高度に先鋭化されながらも､我々の日常から遊離することなく､圧倒的な説得力を以て迫ってくるその作品群に､真の意味での『天才』を感じたものである｡

村上龍のエッセイに｢才能には理由がない､才能のない連中は理由をほしがる｡｣というコメントがある｡正に言えて妙というべきだろう｡

当時､某バンドの某メンバーが､自身でＤＪをしていたラジオ番組で全く的はずれのとぼけた言葉を放っている｡

彼は､このファーストに収録されている｢習わぬ経を読む男｣のタイトルを取り上げ､『メンバー全員で大笑いした』『一度聞いてみたい曲ですね』などと上っ面だけのつまらないコメントを残している｡

十数年たった現在､その彼のバンドのアルバムがほとんど廃盤になっている状況を考えるとき、物事の本質を見抜くことができず､低次元な認識しか持ち得ない人物の限界を見ると同時に､この作品の普遍性を再確認するものである｡

エレファントカシマシが世に出た記念すべき作品。デビューアルバムにしてエレカシの代表的アルバムでもある。

商業的な低迷を始める２作目の作品以後、皮肉にもエレカシの作品は焦り・怒り・憔悴といった内面世界を広げ、美しい曲調と文学的な詩によって鬼気迫る情景描写を完成し、他に比類の無いロックバンドとして存在し続けることになる。

それら２作目以降に比べると本作は詩も音楽も荒削りの魅力があり、なによりも挫折や屈辱を味わう前の若者特有の自信に満ちた勢いを感じさせる曲ばかりである。ラブソング全盛の時期に一切愛・恋について一切触れず、男とは、人生とは、国家とはと大上段に構えたスタンスには宮本の圧倒的な独創性を感じることが出来る。

ライブでは恒例の曲も多く、「ファイティングマン」「星の砂」「デーデ」「花男」などエレカシ全曲を通じても代表的な曲が多く入ったアルバムである。日本のミュージックシーンに大きな衝撃を与えた一枚であり、同時に自信に満ちた正義を気取る宮本が聞ける唯一のアルバムかもしれない貴重な存在。

　エレファントカシマシの1stアルバム。傑作です。
　ここで全曲の歌詞を引用してしまいたいくらい、詞が素晴らしい。ただ世の中を皮肉り、怒りや不平不満をぶちまけるだけではなく、根底にはそんな状況にも諦観せず、開き直った楽観性が満ちています。
　落ち込んだ時や元気が欲しい時に聴く１枚。

　ボーカルの宮本は喉が枯れるんじゃないかというくらい、怒鳴り、叫んでいるので、そういう声が苦手な人にはお薦めできませんが、カッコやスタイルではなく、ロックの本質とはこういうものだ！と知りたい人にはお薦めです。
