   「悲愴」というタイトルとはうらはらな乾いた感性が、グールドの持ち出してきたこの曲の解釈の核だ。冒頭に出てくるいくつかの和音からして、強調された低音の上に薄い音の層が乗っているような響き。どろどろとしたベートーヴェンが好きな人向きの演奏でないことはすでに明らかだ。そうした人々は、鼻にかかった甲高い声を連想させる軽めの音色にも不満を感じることだろう。しかし、おおげさでない演奏を求めるリスナーにとってみれば、この音色こそが好ましく感じられる。彼らなら、キリリと冷えた白ワイン、それも少しスモーキーで石の香りが混じった辛口タイプに似ているとでも言うだろう。

   「月光」もまたドライな演奏である。第2楽章でのはねるようなリズム表現、大胆なテンポの動かし方などが興味深い。身軽で自由なベートーヴェンだ。以上2曲は、暗い部屋の中にいたベートーヴェンの曲を明るいところへ連れ出し、少しばかり運動をさせて健康増進のお手伝いをしてあげたような演奏といえるだろう。

   しかし、最後の「熱情」だけは話が違う。ただでさえ想像力が豊か過ぎる人間に不安の種をこれでもかと吹き込み、憂鬱の極みに追い込んでしまったような演奏だ。まずは第1楽章の異常に遅いテンポ。重い足かせを引きずり、真っ暗闇の中を意味もなく歩き回っているといった風情だ。その抑圧的な気分は曲を通して続く。ちょっとグロテスクでもあるが、その分、前2曲の軽やかさが引き立ち、アルバムの構成上、おもしろい効果を上げている。（松本泰樹）

本作は、モーツァルトを「長く生きすぎた」と断言し、ベートーヴェンも「その作品の多くを評価できない」とのたまうグールドのグールドらしい作品です。
そんなグールドですが、他者と一線を画す技術、構築力を有していることは言うまでもなく、だからこそ本作は価値が高いと言えるでしょう。

つまり、他のヴィルトオーソは皆作曲家を崇拝し、伝統的にベートーヴェン作品に求められる主観的な感情表現を表にしまっている中、技術的には（相対評価だが）２０世紀最高レベルのピアニスト・グールドが、この様に作品を自立的な運動体として構築しなおしたことは、音楽史上にとって貴重な経験であるということです。

上のような理屈を抜きにしても、実際楽しめます。驚きます。
「えっ？こんな曲だっけ？」「あれっ、繰り返しは？」「早っ！」「おそっ！」

　グールドのピアノからは、いつも一種独特の響きを感じる。また、スピード、強弱も彼オリジナルのものがあると思う。まるで曲を編曲しているみたいだ。このＣＤもグールドの個性が濃く出ていると思う。特に熱情は信じられないほどスピードが遅いのだが、不思議なことに退屈してこない。また、悲愴は熱情とは対照的でかなりテンポよく曲が展開される。また、他の曲でも彼がよくやるように１楽章ではリピートがはしおってある。そして、所々でこれもグールドオリジナルのものだが、オルゴールのように一つ一つの音がきれて聞こえる部分がある。（特に３楽章）
　３曲を通してグールドだから許され、またグールドだからできる弾き方で曲ができているように思う。

このベートーヴェンの3作品集は「わざわざグールドが嫌いな作品」集として有名。発売当時はグールド自身の「なんで私はこの3作品が嫌いか」というライナーノーツがついていたとか。

だから私はこのアルバムはグールド流のいやがらせというか、反抗を表しているのだと思う。「熱情」第二楽章あたりを聞いていると、彼がいかにこれらの作品をベートーヴェンの「駄作」だと考えているかが窺がえるような気がする。

でもこれらの中でもグールドが少しは気に入っていたものもあったようだ。鼻歌まじりに弾いている「悲愴」第二楽章がいい例だと思う。この第二楽章だけは、ここに収められているもの以上のものを聞いたことがない。
あらゆる意味でランドマーク的な一枚。
