マイルスのアルバムは１００枚はあるが、聴き飽きないのは１０枚ほど。特に初期のものに傑作が多い。その中でも１枚だけ選ぶとすれば、１９５９年録音のこれだ。コルトレーンのテナー・サックス、キャノンボール・アダレイのアルト・サックス、ビル・エバンスのピアノ、ポール・チェンバースのベース。豪華という表現を通り越したスーパー・メンバー。どの曲もタメ息が出るが、１曲目の「ソー・ホワット」。３曲目のビル・エバンスのイントロが息をのむ美しさの「ブルー・イン・グリーン」がとりわけいい。マイルスの音楽は夜更けが似合う。死ぬまでの何夜、繰り返し聴くことになるのだろうか。音源が磨り減らないＣＤでよかった。ＳＡＣＤなので音は抜群（松本敏之）

1959年作品ということだが、これ以来音楽業界は一体何をしていたのだろうと思うほど、新鮮で、今日のどのアルバムより新しい。

So whatは、ピアノのイントロ、ベースのあと、これまで聴いたこともなかったような新鮮な和音が弾かれる。終始ピアノがリードする。トランペットに次いで入ってくるコルトレーンはどう猛さを隠して、急に洗練されて聴こえる。アルトサックスの澄んだ高音は純粋に生理的に気持ちがいい。Freddie freeloaderはエバンス抜きのおまけ。

Blue in greenは、ピアノの和音から入る。マイルスのソロもしびれる。意外にも、コルトレーンにまで寂寥感がひしひしと伝わる。asは抜いてシンプルにし、ピアノの和音 vs マイルスのバラードという対比を明確にしている。All bluesは作品中唯一リズムが強調された曲。やはりマイルスとエバンスの掛け合いが焦点になっている。コルトレーンは壮大な表現。そして総括するかのようなエバンスのソロ。これを聴くと、多々聴かれるライブでのこの曲は少々雑である。

Flamenco sketchesは静かなピアノの主題とベースで始まる。静寂なトランぺットの主題。後のソロの世界につながるかのようなコルトレーンのゆったり気を大きくもったバラード。asのソロを経て、まさに曲の主題である、水表面をゆらゆら漂うようなエバンスが出てきて、最後マイルスが短くまとめる

その作品の評価について言えば、単に素晴らしいクオリティを持っているという事と、それが歴史的にどのような意義を持っているのかという事は本来別物であろう。例えば、現在コルトレーンのように吹くサックス奏者はかなりいる（この事はその奏者が即コルトレーンの実力と同等であることを意味しない）が、それはコルトレーンらが敷いたレールの上を走っていく事が出来るから可能なだけで、イノベーターとしてのコルトレーンの存在に遠く及ばない。たとえ1950年代にその奏者がいたら、空恐ろしいと感じたとても、所詮そのような事はありえないからだ。カインド･オブ･ブルーの音楽的素晴らしさは、現在においても色あせることなく、何度聞いてもそのよさが伝わってくる。しかも59年という年号のなかで飛びぬけた歴史的な意味合いをはらみ、その後の影響などを考えると、これほどの指標となる作品はほとんどないといてよい。両方を兼ね備えた大傑作だが、さらにフラメンコスケッチのボーナストラックを追加したうれしいＣＤだ。マイルスを聴けばジャズの偉大さ、奥深さ、悲しさ、美しさがわかるだろう。
