このアルバムを録音している最中に、ジャニスは自分の死期を悟ったのではないかと思うくらい、魂の込められた歌を歌っています。ロックの女王と形容されている人ですが、歌うことの本質を心で知っていた歌手だと思います。激しい歌い方のようで実は丁寧に歌っています。ジャニスの死後、よく似たタイプのシャウト系シンガーが世に出てきたようですが、商業的に成功に至らない人が多かったのは、聴衆の心はスタイルでごまかせないからでしょう。
唯一無二のシンガーが最後に残した音源です。ジャニスビキナーの方はまずこれを聴いて下さい。

ジャニスの死後まもなく，このアルバムを深夜のFMで聴きました．ミュ-ジシャンという一個の存在が，これだけ全ての自分を音楽に注ぎ込めるというのは驚異的です．深い絶望や悲しみに打ちひしがれた時，このアルバムはきっと一つの救いになってくれるでしょう．　ジャニスのようなミュ-ジシャンも，そしてこのような血のかよったアルバムも，二度と現れないかもしれません．　素晴らしい．

　「うまれてすみません」、「自分の生まれた風景を覚えている」。日本のいわゆる文豪は、私小説という分野で自分のすっぱだかをさらけ出し、同じような痛みや悩みを抱える人々の共感を得て生きながらえてきたわけだが、ジャニス・ジョプリンも同じフィールドに位置すると思う。

ただ、彼女の場合、音楽というセンチメンタルな地平からの離陸が困難なジャンルから、芸術の高みまで自分の歌を昇華するという困難な作業をやってのけたという点で、凄い。

彼女の作品全部に言えることだが、自己の客観化がとても苦痛であったにもかかわらずそうせざるを得ない寂しさを歌うという皮肉に、僕たちは人生の哀切さといとおしさを感じて、生きる勇気を与えられるのだと思う。「ｗｏｍａｎ　ｌｅｆｔ　ｉｎ　ｌｏｎｌｙ」という歌でさえ、彼女の、単なる自己憐憫で終わってはいない。
