私にとってのBilly JoelはThe Strangerかこれですね。なんとも上品な哀愁に貫かれたアルバムです。無名時代の発売当時のレコードと比較するとYou Can Make Me Freeの後半が大幅にカットされていたり、Tomorrow is Todayのオーケストラが消されていたりと、少し変更がされていますが、もちろんBillyが再発にあたってそうしたのでしょうから納得です。（そもそも無名時代の発売当時盤は製作のミスで回転数が少し早くて声が高くなってしまっていましたが、当然現在のCDは正しく修正されていますね）

当時１４歳の私は、ＦＭ大阪（ＮＨＫＦＭだったかも・・・当時開局していたのはそのどっちかだった。）のビリー特集を聴いていた。
翌日は水泳部の試合だ。休んでやろうか、いやそんなことはできやあしない、との板ばさみで苦しんでいた。
一ヶ月かけてビリージョエルの足跡をたどる特集だった。
（ちょうどストレンジャーがビッグヒットを飛ばした頃であった。）
ラジオから聴こえてきたのはごく素朴なアコースティックな生ピの音、
ひきずりこまれた。
　
当時はこのアルバム（ＬＰだった）は絶版で、この時録ったテープを
大切に大切に聴いていたものだった。
冒頭の『シーズガットアウェイ』や『ノクターン』を
私のへたくそなピアノで繰り返し繰り返し練習したものだった。

復刻版が出ると聞いた時は嬉しくて嬉しくて飛び上がらんばかりだった
ことを思い出す。

このビリージョエルのデビューアルバムは、曲調がかなり今のビリージョエルと違う感じがします。しかしこれもまたいい！！繊細でピアノの魅力が存分に生かされていると思います。大人しめの曲が少し多いですが、その味がわかる人はぜひ買いです！好みによっては、最高傑作ともいえるかも！輸入盤で是非試聴を！
