5.0 out of 5 stars 速さだけでは無いことの証明。, 2002/4/1
このアルバムにはスレイヤーというバンドからすればスローな曲がメインに収録されている。
しかし、スレイヤーはただ単に速いから格好いいのでは決してない。
スローな曲でも根底にあるものはやはり『スレイヤーだけが持つ特別な何か』であり、このアルバムも完全にスレイヤー然としている。

このアルバムがスローになったのは楽曲の殆どを手がけたのがジェフ・ハンネマンであり、当時彼はスピードだけを追及することに疑問を感じていたためだ。
彼の判断は正しかったのだろう。
このアルバムで見事に彼らは新境地に乗り出すことに成功したのである。
『Reign In Blood』は比類なき名作であることは如何ともしがたい事実だが、このアルバムもそれと同様に重要なアルバムであると思う。
なお、『Dissident Aggressor』はジューダスプリーストのカバー曲。

スピードを追求した傑作｢REIGN IN BLOOD｣に続いてリリースされた4thフル・アルバム。

前作でスピードを極めたSLAYERはこのアルバムでスローなナンバーにも挑戦し、
2ビートのスピード・チューンに頼らずとも充分な凄みが出せることを証明した。
スロー・ダウンした事をもってこのアルバムを不当に貶める輩が当時は存在した。

しかし前作でスピードを極めてしまった以上、あれ以上あの方向を推し進めるのは不可能だったわけで、
本作で彼らがスロー・パートを効果的に導入することで随所に登場する爆走パートの爆発力を増すよう
試みたアプローチは間違いなく正解。

2ビートの速い曲さえ入っていれば演奏しているのはサルでもOKみたいなリスナー以外にはこのアルバムの凄みがわかってもらえると思う。
このアルバムをきっかけにSLAYERはリスペクトを一身に集める真に偉大なバンドになったと思う。

勿論"Silent scream"をはじめとしたスピード・チューンも最高の出来。

前作よりも手数の増えたデイヴ・ロンバードのドラムはまさに超人の域に入っている。
