　全米・全英両チャートで No.1 に輝いた1994年作品。社会におけるコミュニケーションの欠如、文明や宗教の衝突など、混迷する世の中を描いた思想的な歌詞が秀逸なアルバムだ。アリーナを制覇した持ち前の浮遊するスペイシーなサウンドも健在。6年半の歳月をかけて書き溜めたというメロディーはどれも素晴らしく、期待を裏切らない。

　向かい合う二つの貌（カオ）と貌。しかしそれは一つになった大きな貌のようでもある…　ジャケットの不思議なモニュメントから想像する通りの音楽で、知的な好奇心をくすぐる作品だ。
　「降りしきる雨の中に立っていて欲しいのか？ 俺から一体何が欲しいんだ？」と歌う "What Do You Want From Me?"、「壁が崩壊した日、僕らは歓声を上げ、グラスを高く掲げた」と歌う "A Great Day For Freedom"、「問題を解決する唯一の手段… それは話し続ける事だ」と歌う "Keep Talking"。切るシングルは次々とヒット。内容の複雑さにも関わらず、アメリカだけで400万枚を売り上げたそうだ。

　「僕は君が潰れてしまうのを見たくて、限界まで追いつめる」と歌う屈折したラヴ・ソング "Take It Back" が個人的には一番好きだ。サウンドだけ聴くと優しいバラードなのだが、流石はイギリスのバンド、と言ったところか。

デイヴ・ギルモアのピンクフロイド全開といった所ですか。実は鬱にはかなりがっかりしたので、余り期待していなかったのですが、むしろこちらの方がすっきりしていていいので意外でした。ロジャー・ウォーターあってのピンクフロイドを思っている方には詰まらない作品かも知れませんが、最大の市場である北米では寧ろこの路線の方が商業的成功を続けられるような気がします。ただ、ピンクフロイドとしての独特の世界を創造していくという意味では、もう限界かなとも思えます。
