ウエストサイド物語はバーンスタインによるものですが、映像がない分、音の一音一音を聞きとめるのに良いように思います。そして改めて気づくのですが、この曲は本当に凄い曲です。音楽だけであっても一世を風靡するものであったと思わせるものがあります。

マンハッタン上空から始まるオープニング、マリアとトニーの愛、衝撃のラスト……映画の名シーンを鮮やかによみがえらせる名盤。初めてこの映画に出会ったときの興奮と感動をはっきりと思い出した。かっこよく、美しく、哀しい。映画をまた観たくなった。

「ウエスト・サイド物語」はとてもアメリカンなミュージカル映画です。
テンポがよく、溌剌とし、登場人物たちはけっこう単純ですが、シンプルなよさがあります。まさに「アメリカ」です。

魅力的なダンスシーンや交わされる若者たちの掛け合いなどに代表されているのは即興性であり、すなわちジャズっぽさです。

バーンスタインが本職であるクラシックではなく、躍動感あふれる音楽を作りこんだだけでも評価されるべき作品ですが、現在まで錆びていない楽曲の普遍性こそがバーンスタインの面目躍如です。

また、情感たっぷりのナンバーではバーンスタインが好んだ音楽嗜好も感じられるところなどは、クラシックファンにも楽しめたりします。

正直、サントラよりも映画そのものを買ってしまったほう!がよいのでは？という気がしないでもないですが、サントラ好きなら買って損のない一枚です。
