音楽で世界は変えられない。それが出来たならビートルズが何十年も前に戦争の無い世界にしただろう。
しかし音楽で人は考え、変わる事が出来る。怒りに叫び、立ち上がる事で周りの人も気持ちすら変える事が出来る。それだけで十分ではないか。それにより世界がほんの少し動けば音楽は娯楽の域ををゆうに超えるだろう。
本気でそう思わせてくれた素晴らしいアルバム。
アートワーク、歌詞、サウンド、演奏力全てにおいてパーフェクト。これを超えるアルバムはもう出ないだろう。

衝撃とか革命というのは、こういう音楽のことを言う。ザック・デ・ラ・ロチャ（Vo）、トム・モレロ（G）、ティム・C（B）、ブラッド・ウィルク（Dr）の4人からなるこのバンドは､1992年L.A.で結成された。音楽と政治は1枚の紙の表裏のように互いの存在を肯定し合う ― その哲学のもと、彼らは歴史/現代批判を、表面的な平和に慣らされてしまったその神経の代わりに心臓をパンプさせる原動力にでもなるかのような勢いで、音と歌詞を武器に容赦なく轟かせる。「アメリカ合衆国」 ― 原住民の抹殺とアフリカ人の奴隷売買で始まった500年前のプロパガンダ。自由を憲法に掲げながらも、500年前のヨーロピアン・システムがもたらしたその影響は、悪循環という手段で人間の精神に寄生する。現在も残る根強い人種差別､搾取、貧困､それらすべての根源は、システムの構造にある。アメリカの大地が育んだ血と精神は、ここ数百年このシステムが犯してきた数々の犯罪を、不平等の壁の後ろで、賢者のように沈黙の熟成を確信し、嵐の前の静けさのようにインテンシティーを増しながら、記憶してきた。そして時代の到来と共に、勢いは堰を切った。Rage Against the Machine ― 革命の音楽。

これは本当に名盤。星五つでは足りない。それくらい好きなアルバム。最初から最後まで、まさに捨て曲なし。
レイジといえば、その政治的メッセージ。それを理解してこそ、本当にレイジを知ることになるんだろう。でも、そのまえにやっぱり音楽ありきって部分もある。日本人だから、歌詞はよくわからなくても、このサウンドで十分伝わるものがある。

レイジは解散しちゃったけど、このアルバムは残り続ける。ヘヴィ・ロックブームが去っても、これだけはずっと聴き続けられる。
