洋楽初心者にもお勧めできる、TOTOの7th.アルバム。1st.や4th.のようにジャケットがシンプルな剣のデザインで、この三つのアルバムが傑作だと個人的には思う。

某ＣＭで使われて日本でもヒットした1を初めとして、代表曲4、凝ったサウンドの5、故ジェフ・ポーカロのドラムが素晴しい7、ノリのよい8(もっとロック色が強くてもいい気もするが）、先日公式ホームページでライブでやって欲しい曲の１位に選ばれた11など、非の打ちどころのない出来になっている。

前作から参加した３代目ボーカリスト・ジョセフの高音ボーカルも前作より冴えており、この編成のままうまく行って欲しかったのだが、ジョセフはこの後脱退することになったのが非常に残念。

　だれかがイニシアティブをとるのでなく、メンバーが一体となりつくったと思しき４作目の路線を踏んだ力作。前作から加入のジョセフは完全にバンドに溶け込み、名実共にTOTOのメインソングライターとなった。今までのTOTOの世界観を作っていたキーボードのスティーブポーカロが抜けた穴は大きいのだが、リズム感とよりポップな感じはジョセフの持ち込んだものであるようだし、前作と聴き比べると世界観の違いがわかりやすい。
　そういった彼のキャラクターか彼の加入によるメンバーのやる気のあらわれか、明るく弾けた曲が多くなっている。この中には、かの「ロザーナ」に似た曲名や「アフリカ」っぽい曲もあって、いわゆるレコード会社の思惑もあるようだが、「サウザンド・イヤーズ」や「ホーム・オブ・ザ・ブレイブ」などはダイナミックで壮大な演奏が聴ける。
　ボーカルのジョセフはこれをもって脱退してしまうのですが、ジョセフのボーカリストとしての資質、ソングライティングは今さらながら惜しい。そんな貴重なアルバムなのです。

☆TOTOといえばトイレのメーカーを思い出す人も少なくないかもしれませんが、そのメーカーとは関係ありません。TOTOとは、“すべて”とか太陽や父親など偉大なものの象徴的な言葉のようです。ところで、よく考えると名曲はＣＭにやはり使われるものです。〈01：PAMELA〉は、マツダ・カペラのＣＭに使われていました。他にも、バラード〈02：ANNA〉や〈05：MUSHANGA〉、〈08：ONLY THE CHILDREN〉などに限らず、全１１曲ひとつひとつの完成度が極めて高く、こんなすごいアルバムはないと感じます。今は亡きジェフ・ポーカロのドラムや、ジョセフ・ウィリアムス（ロス・オリンピックのテーマ等の作曲者として有名なジョン・ウィリアムスの息子）のハイトーン・ヴォイス等、これぞまさしく、スーパー・ロックです。
