デビュー当時は「MOTERHEAD meets VENOM」的な扱いをされていた
彼らの記念すべき1st。

その荒削りな音・演奏ゆえに、「DIAMOND HEAD直系の曲」だという事も
見失いそうになる1曲目に始まり、METALLICAのデビュー前のメンバーの
MEGADETHのムスティンも曲作りに関り、ライブの定番でもある2曲目、
次作以降のスラッシュ路線の原型にして15年後のメロコア・バンドにも
多大な影響を与えた初期の名スラッシュ・ナンバーの3曲目と、
前半は彼らの歴史上でも重要な意味を持つ名曲が並びます。

1曲目を「DIAMOND HEAD直系」と書いたのは
彼らのデビューの発端ともなった伝説のオムニバス
「メタル・マサカー」収録時のヴァージョンを聴くと
良く分かります。
そのヴァージョンは、演奏やジェイムズ・ヘットフィールドの歌が
モロに「まんまDIAMOND HEAD」で、こちらも聴く価値が高いです。

本作で、そんなDIAMOND HEAD臭が消えている事を考えると、
「荒削りで未成熟」とも思える本作の音は
実は「既に確立されたMETALLICAの音」だったのだと思います。
本作以降、方向性が何度も変わる事になる彼らですが、
その原型は全てこのアルバムに詰まっている、と言える
バラエティ豊かなアルバムです。

持っていたのがボロボロになってたので（ボーナストラック付き）、再購入し久しぶりに聴いてみましたが、思わず熱くなっちゃいました(笑)。
純真無垢的なストレートさで、邪魔するやつは蹴っ飛ばすぞ！この野郎！ってな勢いを感じさせてくれます。
音楽的には、言うまでも無くジェイムズのダミ声付きアグレッシブクランチリフが心行くまで堪能できます（今の若い人は引いちゃうかも）。
ライブ定番が多く、彼らが如何にこのアルバムを愛しているか分る気がします。
現在のメタリカしか知らない人には是非聴いていただきたいもんです。世界に名だたるロックモンスターも昔は凄かった？のですよ。それにしてもみんな若い(笑)

これは速い･凄いに尽きる。若くないと出来ひん音ですわ。ブッチギリ。こういうのに下らん能書きは要りません。まず聞くべし。
