ハイドンの後期ソナタも、ブラームスもいいけど、このCD（２枚目）におさめられているベートーベンピアノソナタの「16」「17」「18」（というよりも作品31-1、２、3）はとてもいい。

「16」の出だし、彼独特の玉が転がっていくようなタッチと、音質、速度感が見事だし、気持ちがいい。「17」はテンペストとして有名な楽曲だけれど、多くのテンペスト演奏の中でも、彼のこの演奏はもっとも聴きやすく、何度でも聴ける、優れたものだ。

ベートーベンのピアノソナタ弾きとしては、グルダがベストだと思っているけど、グールドのこれも、違った意味で最上のもののひとつ。

長調、短調、長調という曲の流れも、明るく始まり、テンペストを味わって、朗らかな「17」で終わるので、心地よく聴いていける。たぶんグールドもこのことを意識して、この３つのソナタを分離せずに1枚に入れたのだろう（最初のアナログ盤でもそうなっていた。このアナログ盤のジャケットは、嵐の中の帆船がコラージュで表現され、とても良かった）。３つのソナタの９つの楽章は、どれも味わい深く、現代的で、輝いている。

驚いたのは第15番「田園」でした。テンポのとりかた、アーティキュレーションの多用、アクセントのおきかたはかなり独特で、聴く人が聞けばもったいぶったてらいの多い演奏になるかもしれません（グールド作品の中でもかなり曲芸的かも）。でも、たぶん、ポップスですね、この解釈は。印象的なフレーズをことさら印象的なサビのように念をおす演奏は、後でそらんじられるほどわかりやすくなっていると思います。うーん、バカラックスタイルってとこかぁ。
