平均率２巻は実にグールドにあった曲集だと思う。グールドらしい、遊び心、ドライブ感、彼流の叙情性がよく出ていると思う。まずはじめの前奏曲を聞いていただきたい。どの曲も素晴らしいと思う。その点からいれば、九番のフーガはもっとゆっくり弾いてもらえたら、と思わなくもない。グールドは他のところでは名曲の誉れ高きこの曲を大変ゆっくりに弾いている。ここでは前後のつながりを考えてこうしたのかもしれないが・・・。

グールドの『旧約聖書』は、実は見えない長いスパンに渡りニューヨーク30th・ストリート・スタジオでレコーディングされている。それは1962年1月10日に始まりおよそ7年後の1971年1月31日に終わっている。(のべ35日と24回のセッションと言われている（●＾o＾●）)
例えば第一番ハ長調BWV846を取ってみても前奏曲は1962年6月7日、フーガは9月21日の録音である。それほどにグールドはこの自らの『旧約聖書』として残るこの録音にこだわったのだ。かくて第一巻は1965年に、第二巻は1972年に発売される。

既にグールドは、演奏会から『ドロップアウト』した1964年3月28日以前においては好んでこの平均律をリサイタルの曲目に選んでいる。グールドらしく前奏曲なしでフーガを演奏するというようなことも既に実践していた。グールドはこのバロック鍵盤音楽の最高傑作のこの曲においてですら、自らの好むと好まざるをハッキリと示していたのである。つまり、グールドは前奏曲よりフーガをはるかに好んだのだ。

このプロジェクトのプロデューサーを務めたポール・マイヤーズはこう言っている。
『10も15もテイクを録った。ほとんどどのテイクもミスのない完璧なものでありながらどれも全く違っていた。テンポやダイナミックスだけでなくレジストレーションも全く異なっていた。グールドが次々と生み出す新しいバージョンを聴いていくのは素晴らしい体験だった。』

ここに集積されたもの、それはグールドの平均律における最良の『解釈』であると言えるだろう。そこにこそこの作品のアイデンティティがあり、グールドのアイデンティティがあるのだ。

グールドには「嫌いなのだが嫌いだと認めたくない曲を演奏する段になると、テンポを速めて弾く傾向」があった。また、ゴルトベルク変奏曲の再録音について論じたときに、グールドは、自分が最も好きな音楽とは、ゆっくり演奏されるのを聴きたい音楽と語っている(グレン・グールドの生涯 P.120)。
グールドの「平均律 第2巻」を聴くと、そのテンポを「速すぎる」と感じるリスナーは少なくないだろう。つまり「変ホ長調の前奏曲」以降、総じて速いテンポに、リスナーは戸惑うかも知れない。グールドが、なぜ速いテンポで弾いたのかは、上記の発言をヒントにして、リスナーの受けとめにゆだねられる。私は、この平均律第2巻は、彼が、モーツァルトやベートーヴェンのソナタにおいて、作曲者の指示を無視してまで、速く弾いたのとは事情が違うと見る。つまりインタビュー「コンサート・ドロップアウト」の中で語られた次の言葉「完全に再創造するという観点から作品に取り組むのです。今まで聴いたことがない、と思われるような演奏をするのです。それがうまくできないのなら、もうやめて、その作品は忘れて、なにか別のものをやるべきでしょう」すなわち、平均律第2巻の速いテンポは「完全な再創造」の実践であり、その結果、前人未踏の平均律全巻録音がなされたと私は見る。
